New Cheek Filler: Restylane Contour®
One of the most noticeable signs of aging – that adds years to one’s appearance – is flat, sunken, or sagging cheeks. Youthful looks are characterized by plump “apple” cheeks. But as a man or woman ages, their body produces less hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin every year. And, as a result, the cheeks lose volume and the skin on the face begins to sag.
Fortunately, modern facial filler technologies offer an effective and affordable solution to loss of facial volume. For the last several years, Juvéderm Voluma has been the “gold standard” in hyaluronic acid (HA) based cheek fillers. But a new dermal filler for cheeks was recently approved for by the FDA that is truly a “game changer.” New Restylane Contour® offers an advanced technology in injectable HA cheek filler, specifically designed to add both shape and volume to the cheeks.
How Restylane Contour Cheek Filler Works
Like popular Juvéderm Voluma, Restylane Contour Cheek Filler is composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring substance produced by the body that keeps skin plump and hydrated. Not only do HA-based fillers like Restylane Contour work to hydrate and plump cheeks, but the also stimulate the body’s own collagen production to restore structure and volume to the treated area and reverse age-induced volume loss. Typically, cheek filler formulas have a thicker consistency than other dermal fillers, in order to provide structure and lift to the “apples” of the cheeks.
However, Restylane Contour‘s new formulation offers several advantages over other cheek fillers. Restylane Contour is created with Galderma’s proprietary “XpresHAn Technology™“, which delivers an exceptionally smooth injectable gel that integrates into the skin, which allows for natural expressions that move with the rest of your face. Restylane Contour’s formula was designed to be soft and flexible enough for the face to look natural and beautiful both at rest and when smiling or talking – yet firm enough to retain its volume and shape over time.
Restylane Contour can be effectively injected with both needle and cannula, making it even more versatile. Dr. Ali and our nurse injectors may administered it using either method depending on your cosmetic needs and aesthetic goals.
Areas Restylane Contour Can Treat
Restylane Contour is FDA-approved for both cheek augmentation, as well as correction of what are called “midface contour deficiencies“. This means that it can be used to add shape to the areas of the face to correct asymmetry or improve facial proportions.
When Contour’s thick formula is used to plump and add volume to the face, it also has the effect of “lifting” the loose skin on the mid and lower face – which results in a sort of non-surgical facelift – also sometimes called a “liquid facelift.”
Restylane Contour may also be used as a non-surgical alternative to permanent surgical options like fat grafting or cheek implants.
When was Restylane Contour FDA Approved
Restylane Contour gained FDA approval for adding volume to cheeks in the United States in June, 2021. However, Restylane Contour XpresHAn Technology has been used in Galderma’s their European filler version, called Restylane Volyme®, since 2010.
How Long Does Restylane Contour Last?
Because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance, HA fillers are gradually absorbed by the body over time. And since everybody metabolizes substances in the body at a different rate, the longevity of Restylane Contour will vary from patient to patient. Additionally, the frequency and degree of ones facial expressions, laughing, chewing, etc. will affect the lifespan of any facial filler.
However, in clinical studies, Restylane Contour has been shown to last between 12 to 18 months when used as a cheek filler. And slightly longer in some patients.
During Restylane Contour‘s first clinical trial, 270 patients were evaluated over a 48-week period. 98% of the treated patients reported that they were still pleased with the results of their Contour injections after one year. Additionally, the people in the study required less volume than those treated with the other filler in the study to achieve their desired results.
When You Will See Restylane Contour Results
Patients typically will see results immediately after their cheek filler injections. But keep in mind that full results may take 1 to 3 weeks to develop completely. Additionally, there is also the possibility of redness or mild bruising at the injection site. So, if you are getting your Restylane Contour injections in order to look your best at an upcoming event or special occasion, make sure to schedule your Restylane Contour appointment at AMAE Med Spa in the Troy, MI area a few weeks in advance of the big day!
