Watch Out Botox! New “DAXXIFY™” Is Coming Soon!

Botox – the world’s most popular cosmetic treatment – is the original “neuromodulator”.  This means it temporarily deactivates certain nerves in the face to “paralyze” the facial muscles that are responsible for causing static lines and wrinkles (the ones that are visible when the face is at rest). Although it has other uses, Botox was originally FDA approved as a cosmetic treatment to “freeze” the parallel, vertical “eleven” lines (glabellar lines) between the eyes. Botox, and other neuromodulators, also prevent new wrinkles from forming by keeping the muscles from contracting.

Since the development of Botox, other similar neuromodulators – including Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin® – have also been introduced. And while each of these formulations may have slight differences and their own advantages or disadvantages, Botox is still considered the “gold standard” for most patients who are looking to relax furrows and creases in the face.

However, a new and exciting Botox alternative – called “DAXXIFY™” – received FDA approval as an injectable neuromodulator last month (September 2022). Though not available in the United States yet, Dr. Ali and the nurse injectors at AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI are keeping their eye on this new treatment. In this article we bring our patients up to date on this exciting, new injectable!

How DAXXIFY™ is Different than Botox

Manufactured by Revance Aesthetics (the creator of the RHA® Collection of dermal fillers) DAXXIFY™’s full name is DaxibotulinumtoxinA®. Just like Botox and the other similar Botox-like neuromodulator injectables, DAXXIFY™ works by targeting certain nerves, to temporarily paralyze the facial muscle contractions that are responsible for causing static lines and wrinkles that are visible when the face is at rest.

However, according to the manufacturer, DAXXIFY™ is intended to be a more ‘natural’ neuromodulator than Botox. DAXXIFY™ is a more highly purified version of botulinum toxin type A, and it does not contain any human or animal-based components. DAXXIFY™ also combines the botulinum with with a proprietary stabilizing peptide.

In clinical trials this “purer formula” resulted in smoothing of glabellar lines using less neurotoxin! This may mean that DAXXIFY™ is a more affordable wrinkle relaxing treatment – since only half the amount may be needed to achieve the same results.

Also exciting, DAXXIFY™ is reportedly designed to last longer than all of the other currently available forms of botulinum toxin type A, including Botox, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin®.

However, Botox is FDA approved for 3 uses: to treat glabellar lines (“elevens”), crows’ feet, and forehead lines. While DAXXIFY™ is currently only FDA approval for treatment of moderate to severe “frown Lines” (glabellar lines).

How Effective Are DAXXIFY™ Injections?

In three 3 clinical trials, the following results were reported at 4 weeks after treatment:

• More than 73% of patients achieved significant improvement in their glabellar lines
• 97.5% of patients responded to DAXXIFY™.
• 96% of DAXXIFY™ patients were satisfied with their results.

The study also showed that DAXXIFY™ to is effective for a median duration of 6 months, with baseline wrinkles not returning until after 28 weeks. And some DAXXIFY™ patients in clinical studies maintained their treatment results at 9 months.

DAXXIFY™ may be also safer than Botox and other similar products because (unlike Botox) DAXXIFY™ is stable at room temperature and doesn’t require refrigeration.  DAXXIFY™ also does not contain albumin (a blood-derived protein) that is used in Botox and brands (except Xeomin).
