Can You Correct or Remove Facial Fillers?
Facial fillers – such as Juvéderm and Restylane – are a safe, popular, and effective way to temporarily smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, restore lost volume, and enhance lips and facial contours. When injected by a board-certified cosmetic surgeon or licensed nurse injector, facial fillers produce beautiful, symmetrical, natural-looking results.
But when patients seek facial filler treatments from less experienced or unqualified individuals, they are sometimes left being less than thrilled with their results. Overfilling, asymmetry, lumpiness, and more are some of the problems patients can run into when facial fillers are not applied by a skilled and licensed professional. Other side effects, including infection, allergic reaction, and vascular compromise (injection too close to a blood vessel), are extremely rare, but can also occur.
So, what should a person due if they don’t love the results of their facial filler injections? In this article the facial filler experts at AMAE Med Spa explain what options a patient has when they are dissatisfied with their facial fillers.
Mild Dissatisfaction with Facial Fillers
Mild problems with facial fillers – including moderate lumpiness or slight asymmetry – may be able to be improved by massaging the area. However, it is important to perform the massage using the proper technique. Your provider can instruct you as to whether massage is a good idea – as well as how it should be performed.
In other cases of mild disappointment with facial fillers, patients may also simply decide to “wait it out” – since most injectables only last for a few months to a year. Ask your provider how long the specific fillers used on your face are likely to last, so you can decide if patience is the best course of action.
Correcting “Bad” Facial Filler Injections
If the waiting game, or massaging, isn’t adequate to repair the problem with your facial fillers, a more skilled cosmetic surgeon or nurse injector may be able to make a more immediate correction with judicious injection of additional fillers.
Whether this approach to ‘repair’ a bad filler job will work depends on the type of filler that was originally injected, as well as the nature and severity of the problem(s). Asymmetry and unattractive contours can often be “evened out” with additional fillers that are skillfully injected.
Removing “Bad” Facial Fillers
Not all facial fillers are removable, but hyaluronic acid (HA) products – including Juvéderm, Restylane, and Belotero – can be partially or completely removed with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. When injected into the problem areas, hyaluronidase literally dissolves the hyaluronic acid particles, returning the face to its pre-treatment state.
Hyaluronidase may be a good option to remove a bad filler job, in cases of:
- Overfilling
- Poor Placement
- Prolonged swelling
- Infection
- Lumps not responding to massage
- Vascular compromise (interference with blood flow).
When You Can’t Remove Bad Facial Fillers
Hyaluronidase only dissolves hyaluronic acid, so it will not remove Radiesse, Bellafill, and Sculptra. In some cases, a steroid injection may help a little bit to reverse the effects these fillers to some extent. But waiting for the body to absorb them is the only way to undo most non-HA facial fillers.
In certain extremely rare circumstances, or in matters of medical necessity, these fillers can be surgically removed by a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Ali. But this should be a last resort reserved for extreme cases.
If you are experiencing pain, unusual swelling, or the injection site feels warm to the touch, see your provider or a medical doctor as soon as possible, as this could be a sign of an infection that needs to be addressed immediately.
Preventing Bad Facial Fillers
As with any medical condition, preventing problems in the first place is the best course of action. As the wise old saying goes; “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
Always choose a trained, skilled, and experienced facial filler provider, like those at AMAE Med Spa. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali and our licensed nurse injectors have the knowledge and experience to determine the appropriate type and amount of filler for your needs- as well as the training and skill to inject fillers safely and precisely for the most beautiful result.
