Restylane Injections – Frequently Asked Questions
Restylane is an extremely popular brand of dermal fillers. With many different types of Restylane formulas, and a wide variety of uses, it is a versatile, natural-looking and long lasting brand of dermal filler.
In this article, the dermal filler experts at for AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI answer patients’ frequently asked question about Restylane – to help you determine if Restylane is right for your aesthetic goals.
What is Restylane Made of?
Each formula is a clear gel made of hyaluronic acid – which is a sugar molecule that is also naturally found within the human body. So, Restylane acts almost identically to the body’s own naturally produced “plumping” mechanisms.
What are the different types of Restylane?
Within the Restylane family, there are numerous different dermal filler formulas – each designed to treat a different area of the face or specific aesthetic issue.
The Restylane formulations include:
- Restylane Silk: Lip Filler
- Restylane Lyft: Cheek Volume
- Restylane Refyne: Moderate Nasolabial Folds
- Restylane Defyne: Severe Nasolabial Folds
- Restylane Kysse: Lip Filler
- Restylane Contour: Cheek Volume

How are Restylane injections administered?
As with any dermal filler, we disinfect the area to be treated. Depending on the area being injected and the Restylane formula being used, either a small a fine needle (thinner formulas / smaller amounts) or a blunt micro-cannula (thicker gel formulas / larger areas) will be used to inject the Restylane.
In most cases, anesthetic is not needed. But it can be requested and applied locally.
Dr. Ali or our nurse injector will skillfully inject small amounts into different areas to precisely fill wrinkles, add volume, shape/contour the face, or enhance the lips. After the Restylane injection, the doctor or nurse may gently massage the treated area to distribute the formula and smooth out the results.
How long do Restylane injections take?
This will depend on the area(s) being treated and the number and amount of Restylane injections needed. However, Restylane injection does not take very long. The typical appointment only takes approximately 20 to 45 minutes – allowing time to discuss your appearance goals and assess your skin.
Touch-up treatments are also sometimes performed approximately two weeks after the initial injections to optimize, adjust or “tweak” the results. These appointments are very quick.
Are Restylane injections painful?
Most of our Birmingham, MI patients describe Restylane injections as mild discomfort – much like any other “shot”, vaccine or injection.
For patient comfort, many of the Restylane formulas have the local anesthetic lidocaine right in the formula to “numb” the area. Restylane is also injected with special needles designed specifically for easy skin penetration.
Who can’t get Restylane injections?
Patients who have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid based products should not get Restylane, although this is very rare. Patients with bleeding disorders, active skin disease or skin inflammation, or any infection or tumor in or near the treatment area should also avoid fillers of any kind.
Restylane products have also not been tested in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Be sure to disclose any underlying allergies, skin conditions, pregnancy, or medical issues you may have before getting any dermal fillers. Your doctor or nurse injector will discuss any contraindications or precautions with you before Restylane treatment.
How long do Restylane injections last?
Restylane is a long-lasting but non-permanent dermal filler, that is gradually absorbed by the body over time. The longevity of the results may vary depending on the formula used and the area treated. some Restylane injections deliver lasting results for up to 18 months.
Generally Restylane can last 6 months for lips and perioral rhytids (smoker lines), 6 months to a year in facial wrinkles and folds, up to 12 months in the cheeks, and as long as 18 months in nasolabial folds.
Can I wear make-up after Restylane injections?
Yes, after 24 hours you may apply makeup as usual to the Restylane injection site.
Since some mild bruising is possible, many of our Birmingham, MI dermal filler patients apply a light cover up or concealer after 24 hours. A yellow-toned concealer is often to hide signs of blue discoloration, while a concealer with a slight green/yellow tone is recommended to cover up any residual redness.
Are there side effects possible with Restylane injections?
Side effects are extremely rare with Restylane injections when performed by a skilled doctor or nurse injector. Since Restylane is made of hyaluronic acid – a substance found naturally in the body – reactions are very rare. The most common side effect after dermal fillers include mild swelling, bruising, redness, or tenderness. These side effects generally disappear within a few day after getting injections.
