Which Dermal Filler is Better, Belotero or Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is the most well known and widely used dermal filler. But there are many other highly effective facial filler products on the markets with different and unique uses. One such injectable is  Belotero Balance®, which provides an exciting alternative to Juvéderm.

Since many people have never heard of Belotero Balance®, in his article we explain what it is and why it is different – and in some applications better – than Juvéderm.

The Biggest Difference Between Belotero & Juvéderm

Both Juvéderm and Belotero Balance® are formulated using hyaluronic acid to increase the volume of skin and fill lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a sugar molecule that is naturally found in the human body – so it is both natural looking and free of generally side effects.

But Belotero & Juvéderm have different HA formulations, making them unique and requiring different techniques when they are injected.

Belotero Balance is injected under the top layer of the skin, to treat superficial fine lines and wrinkles. Juvéderm is injected deeper into the skin to fill-in and plump etched lines.

What Lasts Longer, Belotero & Juvéderm?

Belotero is a thinner formula, meaning it can be injected more precisely. However, Belotero’s lower density also means it is absorbed by the body more rapidly than thicker HA gels like Juvéderm.

As a result, Belotero lasts up to a year, versus Juvéderm which has formulas that can last up to two years.

Does Belotero or Juvéderm Hurt More?

Juvéderm XC formulas contain lidocaine to help numb the treated are during injections. However, Juvéderm is also available without lidocaine for patients who may be allergic.

Belotero products now also contain the anesthetic lidocaine to help patients be more comfortable during their injections. Most patients do not need any additional numbing. However, patients who are concerned about pain may request the Dr. Ali or our nurse injectors also use a topical anesthetic.

Belotero is injected using a special very fine needle since it is a thinner formula than Juvéderm. And Belotero is not injected as deeply as Juvéderm.  So, some patients do report that Belotero hurts somewhat less than Juvéderm injections.

Is Belotero or Juvéderm More Versatile?

Both Belotero and Juvéderm come in a variety of formulas – each designed for different uses and different areas of the face.

The Belotero family of products includes formulations with varying consistencies for treating very fine lines to deep folds, as well as for performing facial contouring, lip augmentation, and cheekbone enhancement.

Juvéderm Ultra XC and Volbella XC, are designed primarily for lips, while Juvéderm Vollure XC, is made for moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. Juvéderm Voluma XC, is a thicker gel that is ideal for lifting and contouring the cheeks.

Juvéderm is injected deeper into the skin than Belotero and is better for deeper and more severe wrinkles and folds. It can also be used to add volume under the skin to increase the volume in cheeks Juvéderm can also be used for dramatic lip augmentation.

However, Belotero’s fine gel formula allows Dr. Ali to fill individual fine lines and wrinkles precisely and accurately – with extremely natural looking results.
