Injectable Trends: East Coast vs. West Coast (Part 1)
Allergan, the company responsible for injectable products like Juvéderm and Botox, shed some light on the statistics of their consumers with their recent 360° Aesthetics Report. The report revealed that within the next year, 73% of consumers plan on getting a “physician-administered aesthetic treatment,” such as injectables. The report also stated that as many as 34% of the US people surveyed will not post pictures of themselves on Instagram without first treating their face with injectables. On top of that, a whopping 63% of men and women throughout the world believe that their success in life is largely determined by their physical appearance.
Injectable use is, not surprisingly, more prevalent on both coasts – in style-setting L.A. and cutting-edge NYC. Since Detroit is right in the middle of the country, we’ll take a look at East Coast and West Coast injectable trends in the Allergan study. And then you can decide which approach to injectables at our Detroit area med spa is right for you.
Injectable “Inspiration”
On the west coast, the primary source of inspiration for women getting injectables are celebrities and social media influencers. Women on the East Coast, on the other hand, tend to turn to friends and family for injectable inspiration.
Doctors in Los Angeles report droves of patients seeking out injectables to emulate the looks of celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian. This trend in the field of injectables has given weigh to what is known as the “Instagram Face:” a phenomena wherein countless women on social media all appear interchangeable after citing the same sources of inspiration for their injectable treatments.
Women on the East Coast, on the other hand, seek out injectables less to look like any given celebrity, but instead to look like the best version of themselves they can be. Striving instead to simply appear more beautiful for their friends and family, women on the East Coast will undergo injectables in order to look like a “photoshopped” version of herself: still uniquely her, but with the added touch that can only be obtained through aesthetic procedures like injectables.
Injectable Approach
Women based out of Los Angeles tend to turn to injectables and other aesthetic procedures in search of a more uniform look, one that favors lifted cheekbones, wider eyes, and plump, injectable-enhanced lips. This stands in contrast to New York women, who generally turn to injectables and other aesthetic procedures to enhance their own features, while preserving the qualities that makes their face unique.
In many cases, this is a result of the pride many New York-based women take in their own ethnic heritage, and a desire not to compromise features specific to their heritage through aesthetic procedures like injectables.
Back in Los Angeles, injectable requests are often to make the patient look more like someone else – such as a Kardashian, a famous actress, or even Ivanka Trump (yes really!)
Injectables Trends: Where Bigger is Better
Lip filler injectables are popular with both East Coast and West Coast women, with LA women favoring a more dramatic appearance and New York women favoring something more subtle.
In the posh celebrity haven of Calabasas, CA, a successful lip injectable procedure is marked by exaggerated, sultry lips achieved through injectables like Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC. For the more natural-looking lips desired by East Coast patients, the injectable Juvéderm Ultra XC is often employed.
Patients on the East Coast wish to walk away from injectable procedures looking like they never even had any “work done.” Instead, women on the East Coast choose injectables to emphasize their own natural beauty through subtle, imperceptible adjustments to their features.
Most Los Angeles patients, on the other hand, walk away from their injectable procedure having undergone a full does of products such as Juvéderm or Botox, procedures patients are advised to have “touched up” every three to six months, depending on their specific injectable treatment.
That being said, Angelenos are statistically less likely to return to their doctor for an injectable touch-up appointment. And while New York women use fewer units of an injectable product per treatment, they actually undergo more treatment sessions.
