How to Choose the Right Facial Filler
Facial fillers, sometimes called dermal fillers or “injectables”, can plump thinning lips, lift eyebrows, enhance cheekbones, erase under-eye circles, fill in smile lines, smooth wrinkles and even eradicate crow’s feet! Facial fillers leave patients looking rested, rejuvenated and more youthful.
But with so many facial fillers on the market, how does a person know which one is right for them? Finding the right facial filler will depend upon the area of the face to be treated, the degree of skin damage to be corrected, how elastic or inelastic your skin is, your appearance goals, and more.
The best way to choose a facial filler is to consult with a doctor or nurse injectable specialist at AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI who can assess your skin and make the best recommendation for your unique situation. However, here are some general things to know about some of the most popular facial fillers.
Juvéderm Facial Filler
Juvéderm is actually a collection of different filler formulas designed to be used in different areas of the face. The main ingredient in Juvéderm is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring substance found in the body that gives the skin moisture, volume, and elasticity.
Hyaluronic acid gets depleted as people age, resulting in wrinkles and loss of facial volume. Injected HA acts like a sponge, attract water into the skin and plumping up the areas in which it was injected. Additionally, Juvéderm injections boost the skin’s own production of collagen.
Juvéderm offers the advantage of coming in a variety of formulations, each with different properties specifically designed for different uses – from plumping lips to filling wrinkles and adding volume to cheeks or treating undereye circles. Some thicker Juvéderm formulas can add volume to the face that lasts up to two years!

Renuva Facial Fillers
Renuva is an injectable treatment in which small amounts of grafted fat tissue are transferred into a patient’s existing fat tissue – to “fill in” liposuction divots, cellulite dimples, and other minor cosmetic irregularities.
Renuva is a natural, non-synthetic process, because it uses fat tissues that comes from donors, which has been tested, screened and sterilized – in accordance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s requirements for donor tissue. This process is called an “allograft”. The biggest advantages of Renuva are it’s natural appearance and long lasting results.
Because Renuva essentially becomes a part of the patients’ facial structure, it looks incredibly natural. And, results can last an amazing ten years!

Restylane Facial Filler
Like Juvéderm, Restylane also uses is hyaluronic acid to smooth away wrinkles and folds and add volume to thin lips. There are also many different formulas of Restylane.
Restylane Lyft is a thicker gel used to correct severe wrinkles and folds, as well as add volume in the cheeks.
For lips, Restylane Silk is made with smaller particles than other facial fillers, designed especially to enhance the lips. While newer Restylane Kysse is unique in that it adds color as well as volume to the lips – and it is the first lip filler designed with XpresHAn Technology™ that offers flexible movement of the mouth for both natural feel and expression.
Radiesse Facial Filler
Radiesse Facial Filler is used to treat moderate-to-severe facial creases, such as the “puppet lines” or “parentheses” around the mouth. It also can be used to plump up cheeks and other facial contours. However, it is not for use on the lips.
Radiesse does not use hyaluronic acid (HA) like many other fillers. Instead, Radiesse contains microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite, a type of mineral that’s found in human teeth and bones. Radiesse immediately replenishes lost facial volume – and over time the gel is absorbed and the body metabolizes the calcium, leaving behind the patient’s own collagen.
