Sclerotherapy Varicose Vein Treatment FAQs (Part 2)
CLICK HERE for PART 1 of Sclerotherapy FAQs
Are There Side Effects to Sclerotherapy?
In limited instances, some sclerotherapy patients may develop a dark discoloration of the injected area – called hyperpigmentation. However, in the majority of cases, this discoloration will completely vanish within 6 months.
Another potential side effect is the formation of new spider veins, in the area that was treated with sclerotherapy. This does not happen in most patents. But when it does occur, these new veins also typically disappear within 6 months.
Very rare complications include the formation of an ulcer or sore around the injection site, or small blood clots in the surface veins called superficial thrombophlebitis.
How Long After Sclerotherapy will My Varicose Veins Go Away?
The injected veins only take a few weeks to fade away, although occasionally with larger veins it may take a month or more to see the full results. Rarely, in some instances, very stubborn veins may need more than one sclerotherapy treatment.
Are There Other Treatments for Varicose Veins & Spider Veins?
Yes, both surgery and IPL (intense pulsed-light) “laser” therapy can also be used to remove or destroy some varicose veins and spider veins.
We offer Nordlys Ellipse IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment in our Med Spa. This is typically the recommended treatment for smaller or “spider” veins.
Surgical removal of the varicose veins is also an option. But in most cases it is easier – with fewer risks and far less recovery time – to simply treat varicose veins with Sclerotherapy or IPL exposure. Doctor Ali will offer you a consultation to determine what varicose vein treatment is best for your individual situation.
What is the Recovery Time for Sclerotherapy Varicose Vein Treatment?
There is virtually no “downtime” after Sclerotherapy – and most people return to their normal activities on the same day of the treatment. However you should have someone drive you home (or take an Uber, cab or Lyft) after the procedure.
You will need to wear compression stockings for about two weeks after the Sclerotherapy treatment, in order to maintain compression on the treated veins. You should also avoid strenuous exercising for two weeks after the varicose vein procedure.
Additionally, avoid sun exposure to the treated areas for at least a couple of weeks. Sun exposure – when combined with the inflammation caused by the injections – can result in dark spots developing on the skin, especially in people with dark skin tone.
