Sclerotherapy Varicose Vein Treatment FAQs (Part 1)
What is Sclerotherapy Varicose Vein Treatment?
Sclerotherapy is a fast and routine outpatient medical procedure in which a chemical is injected into a varicose vein or spider vein to eliminate it.
How Does Sclerotherapy Varicose Vein Treatment Work?
The injected chemical irritates and damages the innermost lining of the vein. This results in swelling and clotting that blocks the blood circulation in the vein. This then forces blood to reroute through other healthier veins.
The unused vein eventually collapses and is reabsorbed into the body tissue – ultimately fading away completely.
Treated veins only take a few weeks to fade away, although occasionally with larger veins it may take a month or more to see the full results. Rarely, in some instances, very stubborn veins may need more than one sclerotherapy treatment.
Who is a Good Candidate for Sclerotherapy Vericose Vein Treatment?
Because it is a non-surgcal procedure, both men and women of almost any age can safely and effectively undergo sclerotherapy to treat varicose veins.
However, while Sclerotherapy is extremely safe for most people, women should wait to have the treatment if they are pregnant or breast-feeding.
People with underlying blood vessel disease, a recent illnesses, or an existing medical condition such as a heart condition or a past history of blood clots may not be good candidates. Similarly, sclerotherapy may not be indicated for morbidly obese individuals. This will be up to the discretion of your own personal physician, and Doctor Ali, who will examine you before the procedure.
Patients are genrally screened using a special ultrasound technique prior to treatment. In situations where there is only a small area of spider veins, an ultrasound is usually not necessary.
Are there Other Benfits to Getting Rid of Varicose Veins with Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is most often done for cosmetic reasons – to improve the appearance of calves and thighs. However, treating varicose veins can also have certain medical benefits.
Sclerotherapy can improve symptoms related to varicose veins, including:
- Aching
- Swelling
- Burning
- Leg cramps at night
Is Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins Safe?
Sclerotherapy is a very routine and safe “outpatient” procedure with very few complications.
Temporary side effects may include some bruising, redness, dark spots, or tiny red blood vessels at the injection site. These side effects typically go away within a few days or weeks. In rare cases, it may take months for these tiny marks to fully disappear.
More serious side effects and complications, such as blood clots, are possible but are extremely rare.
