Laser Vein Removal: What to Expect Before, During & After
We offer fast, painless, state-of-the-art, non-invasive laser treatments for getting rid of spider veins and small varicose veins anywhere on the body, at our Birmingham, MI Med Spa.
In this article we explain what to expect before during and after your laser vein removal treatment.
Before Laser Vein Removal
Four weeks before laser vein removal, patients should avoid exposure to the sun. Smoking causes constriction of the blood vessels so it should be avoided for at least four hour prior to treatment.
A patient may shower on the day of the treatment but should not use any type of topical body creams, lotions or other body products.
During Laser Vein Removal
The laser vein removal procedure is performed by a trained Ellipse operator who guides the flash-lamp to the treatment area. The Ellipse 12PL+ system is unique in that it filters light two ways and allows only the correct wavelengths of light to reach the patient’s skin and find the hemoglobin in the blood.
The blood in the vessels absorbs the light and creates a heat reaction that causes the blood to coagulate and break down protein in the vessel wall. This causes the vessel to dissolve and the body disposes of the waste naturally.
The Ellipse treatment ensures patient comfort with SoftCool™, a state-of-the-art cooling technique that protects the skin surrounding the laser vein removal treatment area and creates a nearly pain-free experience when treating smaller vessels. Only mild patient discomfort has been reported during the treatment of larger vessels.
After Laser Vein Removal
Redness and swelling are common inflammatory reactions following laser vein removal and are signs the treatment was successful. Patients should stay out of the sun for thirty days following treatment, even if swelling, redness or other signs of inflammation are gone. If exposure to the sun cannot be avoided, a minimum 30 SPF sunscreen should be used to protect the treatment area.
Although redness usually disappears 1 to 2 hours following treatment, 100% aloe vera gel can be used at home to reduce residual redness over the next few days. Vessels may appear blurred after treatment and a small amount of swelling occasionally occurs, especially around the eyes for some patients but it should only last 2 to 4 days.
Patients may see the immediate disappearance of smaller veins and blood vessels, but larger ones typically disappear gradually over a period of several weeks.
In very rare cases, a treated vessel may retain or collect blood in which case, the doctor will ask the patient to contact them 2 days after the treatment.
Most individual vessels only require a laser vein removal single treatment, but Dr Ali will examine the patient and make an accurate assessment in case a larger vessel requires a second treatment to deliver optimal results.
