Facial Redness: Causes and Treatments (Part 1)
The majority of red facial skin issues are purely aesthetic in nature – and are generally not dangerous – although they can certainly undermine one’s self-confidence.
However, some types of redness on the skin can be indications of a more serious underlying disease. But even if your facial redness is not causing pain or discomfort, it can still be distressing.
In this article the skin care experts at AMAE Med Spa in Bloomfield Hills area address some of the most prevalent kinds of hyperpigmentation, as well as the signs, symptoms, causes, and recommended treatments for each.
Facial Redness Caused by Spider Veins
When capillaries or blood vessels on the face expand or rupture, they can become extremely visible and under the skin’s surface. These broken capillaries are best often characterized as “spider veins,” because they created red spider web-shaped patterns visible under the skin’s surface. While they may appear everywhere on the body, spider veins are most often seen on the face or legs, and they do not produce any symptoms – other than a change in appearance that many people find troubling or embarrassing.
There are a number of causes of broken capillaries resulting in visible spider veins. Genetics, pregnancy, UV sun exposure, allergic responses, alcohol use – and even violent sneezing, coughing or vomiting – are all factors that can contribute to spider veins on the face.
Spider veins affect men and women, and are more visible in patients with lighter skin tones, although they may appear on anybody.
Facial Redness Caused by Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that causes flushed, reddish-toned skin on the face, as well as swollen blood vessels and sometimes red, pus-filled lumps around the nose, cheeks, and chin. Unlike spider veins, this type of redness can be accompanied by pain and infection.
Rosacea symptoms may develop and then disappear, lasting weeks to months before reappearing. Visible blood vessels on the nose and cheeks, sensitive skin, and a broad patch of redness in the middle of the face that may feel hot or swollen, are all signs and symptoms of rosacea. Small pimples with or without pus and a skin appearance similar to acne may or may not be present.
Eye irritation, dryness, swelling, and redness of the eyes and eyelids are also reported by around half of all rosacea patients. Rosacea symptoms may affect anybody, although it is more prevalent in middle-aged women with lighter skin tones.
While the exact origin of rosacea is unknown, most doctors think that the symptoms are caused by a combination of factors such as genetics, lifestyle factors, and other triggers such as: alcohol consumption, too-hot or too-cold weather, exposure to sun or wind, allergic responses and even spicy food.
Facial Redness Caused by Rhinophyma
Overgrowth of the sebaceous glands causes a medical condition called rhinophyma. It appears as a swollen bottom part of the nose with an enlarged sebaceous gland. Rhinophyma is most common in males between the ages of 25 and 50 and is much more prevalent among Caucasian people – especially those of Northern and Eastern European ancestry.
Patients experience swollen oil glands in the early stages of rhinophyma, which may be eventually accompanied with papules or pustular rosacea in certain individuals.
Once sebaceous gland overgrowth is established, topical medications are generally going to be ineffective, and a professional clinical treatment method (such as a laser procedure) must be used.
