What to Expect During Sclerotherapy Varicose Vein Treatment (Part 1)
Sclerotherapy is a simple procedure performed in our Birmingham Medical Spa that gets rid of varicose and spider veins.
Dr. Ali and his trained and experienced medical staff have helped hundreds of men and women in Birmingham, west Bloomfield, Troy, MI – and across Oakland County – get rid of ugly veins with sclerotherapy.
In this article we explain the Sclerotherapy process from start to finish.
Before Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins
If you take aspirin, Anti-inflammatories (Motrin, Advil, Ibuprofen, Celebrex, etc.), or blood thinners, Doctor Ali’s office will instruct you on when to stop taking the medication before the procedure, to reduce the chances of bleeding.
For a minimum of 24 hours before the procedure, avoid shaving your legs or applying any lotion to them.
Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins Appointment
Before the Sclerotherapy procedure Doctor Ali will perform a physical exam and gather your medical history, to ensure you are a good candidate for the treatment. He will want to make sure you are not pregnant, breastfeeding, and do not have any underlying allergies or medical conditions such as vein disease or blood clotting issues.
Depending upon which veins are involved, Doctor Ali may also perform ultrasound imaging on the veins – to produce images of structures inside the body.
Sclerotherapy is done in our Birmingham Medical Office and generally takes less than an hour to complete.
During the Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins Procedure
Sclerotherapy is simply an injection (“shot”) so it does NOT require anesthesia.
You will lie on your back with your legs slightly elevated. The area to be treated will be sanitized.
Doctor Ali will then use a fine needle to slowly insert a special solution into the vein(s) you wish to get rid of.
Typically the injected solution is liquid. However, sometimes a foam solution may be used, particularly when a larger vein is involved.
The injected solution irritates the vein and causes it to swell and develop scar tissue. This causes the blood to go through other veins, and the treated vein eventually collapses and is absorbed by the body.
