What to Expect During Sclerotherapy Varicose Vein Treatment  (Part 2)

Sclerotherapy is a routine procedure performed in our Birmingham Medical Spa that gets rid of varicose and spider veins.

What Sclerotherapy Varicose Vein Injections Feel Like

The injected sclerotherapy solution itself also contains a local anesthetic (numbing drug) called lidocaine to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible.

Most people only experience minor stinging, like any “shot”. Occasionally there may slight cramping when the needle is inserted into the varicose vein. If you experience more intense pain, let Doctor Ali know, so he can make you more comfortable and ensure that the solution is not leaking from the vein into surrounding tissue.

Most veins can be treated with a single injection.  However, the number of injections depends on the number and size of the varicose veins being treated.

After Your Sclerotherapy Treatment for Varicose Veins

Once the needle has been withdrawn, the treated area will be compressed and massaged in order to keep blood out of the injected vein, and disperse the injected solution.

If multiple varicose veins are being treated, a compression pad may also be taped onto the injection site. This keeps the area compressed while Doctor Ali moves on to treating the next varicose vein.

Patients are able to get up and walk around almost immediately after the Sclerotherapy procedure. In fact, walking and moving your legs is a very important part of the process to prevent the formation of blood clots.

Generally people return to their normal activities on the same day of the Sclerotherapy. However you should have someone drive you home (or take an Uber!) after the procedure.

The Weeks after Your Sclerotherapy Treatment for Varicose Veins

You will also need to wear compression stockings or bandages for about two weeks after the Sclerotherapy treatment, in order to maintain compression on the treated veins. You should also avoid strenuous exercising for two weeks after the varicose vein procedure.

Additionally, avoid sun exposure to the treated areas for at least a couple of weeks. Sun exposure – when combined with the inflammation caused by the injections – can result in dark spots developing on the skin, especially in people with dark skin tone.

If you were treated for small varicose veins or spider veins, you can typically expect to see close to complete results in as little as three to six weeks. Larger veins may take three to four months to fully “disappear”.

In most cases, Doctor Ali will want to schedule a follow-up visit about a month after the Sclerotherapy to check your progress, and decide if any further Sclerotherapy sessions are needed.

Sclerotherapy as a treatment for varicose and spider veins has a very high success rate. However, some larger or more stubborn veins may require more than one treatment. If this is the case, you typically need to wait about six weeks before undergoing another sclerotherapy session.
