What’s the Difference Between Dermal Infusion, Dermaplaning & Microdermabrasion?
While most people understand the importance of taking care of their skin, the many spa skincare treatments that are available can be confusing. This is especially true when the names of many of the treatments are so similar.
Three popular and effective skincare treatments that are often confused are: Dermal Infusion, Dermaplaning & Microdermabrasion. In this article, the skincare experts at AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI explain the difference between these procedures, to help you decide which is best for you!
Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning is the oldest and least complicated of these three treatments – yet it has its own unique set of skincare benefits.
During dermaplaning a trained and licensed aesthetician uses a sterilized, medical grade, scalpel to gently stroke the face – literally removing or “exfoliating” the top layer of the skin. Dermaplaning can removes about 21 days’ worth of dead skin cells, and also gets rid of fine, vellus facial hair (aka “peach fuzz”).
Removing these hairs is not just cosmetic. The fine hairs on your face can also trap and accumulate oil and dead skin cells – causing breakouts, enlarged pores, as well as causing skin to look dull.
Scraping the top layer of the dermis off also creates microscopic “wounds” in the skin. The body reacts to these tiny wounds by activating healing mechanisms that replenish and regenerate the skin – including stimulation collagen production. And collagen production improves skin quality and tone, making it more “plumped” and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
A big advantage to dermaplaning is that it is non-chemical and 100% natural. So it is safe for virtually every skin type and tone, as well as for pregnant and nursing women! (However, it is not a good treatment for people with active, cystic or enflamed acne.)
Additionally, scraping off the epidermis allows medical grade skin care products that we use in our Birmingham Med Spa to penetrate the skin better and deeper.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a more aggressive form of exfoliation than dermaplaning. This treatment uses a specialized machine that delivers abrasion, pressure, and suction to remove the top layer of skin.
Typically, microdermabrasion involves a pen-like applicator that pressure-sprays abrasive micro-crystals onto the face to abrade away the skin. Microdermabrasion can also include the application of a diamond tip that mechanically removes the skin cells. Suction is then used to remove the dead skin cells, oil and debris from the surface and from the pores.
Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure used to renew overall skin tone and texture. It can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin-related concerns and conditions.
But, because microdermabrasion facials are more aggressive than dermaplaning, more redness is to be expected than with dermaplaning.
And while both dermaplaning and microdermabrasion improve the skin’s ability to absorb nutritive serums, microdermabrasion does not remove fine hairs like dermaplaning does.
