PRP Facial FAQS (Part 1)
What is a PRP Facial?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Facials, involves extracting a vial of a patient’s blood from their arm (Like a regular blood test). The blood is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma – the fluid part – from the red and white blood cells.
The concentrated plasma that is left is rich in platelets – the part of the blood rich with “growth factors”. The plasma containing the highly concentrated growth factors is then injected into the face either with a fine syringe or through “microneedling”.
Why is a PRP Facial called a “Vampire Facial”?
Celebrities and social media stars like Kim Kardashians and Bar Rafaela popularized the term “Vampire Facial” for PRP facials – when their “shockingly bloody photos garnered a lot of reactions.
Although the bloody effects may look a bit scary, this treatment is not painful and not at all dangerous – in spite what its nickname “Vampire Facial’ name suggests. At our Birmingham, Mi Medical Spa we prefer to use the correct medical term Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP Facial – rather than the sensationalizing term “Vampire Facial”.
What Does Microneedling do During a PRP Facial?
Microneedling involves multiple tiny piercings of the skin with ultrafine, clinical-grade, sterile needles.
This helps the PRP to penetrate the skin more deeply. Additionally, the microneedling itself stimulates the skin to increase collagen and elastin production for smoother, fuller-looking skin.
What Skin Conditions Does a PRP Facial Treat?
PRP Facials can remove lines and wrinkles, fill in “folds” around the mouth or between the eyes, tighten and plump the face, brighten dull skin, erase dark spots, eliminate acne scarring and more.
Does a PRP Facial Hurt?
The PRP facial procedure is relatively painless. Particularly when applied via microneedling, like we use in our Birmingham, MI Med Spa.
Topical anesthetic can also be applied to ease or eliminate any discomfort.
What Does a PRP Facial Look Like?
Below is an accurate photo of the typical amount of blood patients experience with a PRP facial. The blood is withdrawn from the arm using a needle.
When it is re-injected into the face via microneedling, a superficial amount of the blood remains on the surface of the skin. This is what creates the alarming appearance – but the face is not actually bleeding.
