Dermal Fillers – Before & After Treatment Guidelines
Thanks to celebrities who have been outspoken about their positive experiences with cosmetic procedures, dermal fillers have recently enjoyed a surge in popularity. Anyone who has decided to undergo dermal fillers is probably both a little excited and a little nervous – and most likely has lots of questions.
But at Birmingham, MI’s AMAE Med Spa, our patients can take comfort in knowing that while there is a lot of important steps to take before undergoing dermal fillers, there is nothing to be afraid of. In this article we explain what you can do before and after getting dermal fillers to make the procedure as successful as possible to achieve the best results.
Before Getting Dermal Fillers
When you make your appointment, you will be given a list of Pre-Treatment Instructions for getting dermal fillers. Always follow your own doctor’s instructions closely for the best results. However, here are some general guidelines for all patients to follow before their dermal filler appointment.
In the two days before dermal filler treatment, patients should avoid drinking alcohol, as well as consuming vitamin E or Ginkgo Biloba. During this time, dermal filler patients should also refrain from taking aspirin, as well as anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen.
Dermal filler patients with a history of oral herpes simplex should be tested before their dermal filler procedure. Be sure to discuss this with your treating physician and with Dr. Ali prior to the day of your dermal filler appointment.
What to Expect After Getting Dermal Fillers
At the end of your appointment, you will be given a list of Post-Treatment Instructions for care of your new dermal fillers – which can vary with the type of filler used. Always follow your own doctor’s instructions closely for the best results. However, here are some general guidelines for all patients to follow after their dermal filler appointment.
It is possible, depending on the material used in the dermal filler procedure, to see immediate results directly following the procedure. Many dermal filler patients who visit Birmingham, MI’s AMAE Med Spa are able to see positive changes to the overall appearance of their face by the time they leave their appointment. In most cases, dermal filler patients rarely have to wait longer than to the end of the week to see results from their procedure.
On the first day following treatment, dermal filler patients may experience some minor redness of the skin surrounding the treatment area. This is a completely natural part of the dermal filler process and should not be mistaken for an allergic reaction to the treatment. Side effects such as this are not cause for alarm, and generally will subside after the first two days.
Ice may be applied for 20 minutes out of every hour (or as needed) to treat swelling, but it is important to never apply ice directly to skin that has been injected with dermal fillers. In place of ice, some dermal filler patients chose to achieve the same results with a bag of frozen peas. In any case, the swelling that accompanies dermal filler injections usually lasts no longer than 3 days.
While extremely uncommon, some dermal filler patients report minimal bleeding out of the sight of the injection, which occasionally results in bruising. Should this occur, apply pressure to the site of the bruise in intervals of 15 minutes, and over the next few days frequently treat with cold compresses.
In the rare instances of dermal fillers being accompanied by bruising, it is generally resolved after just a few days, and almost never lasts longer than a week.
What to Do (and Not Do) After Getting Dermal Fillers
Do not take Aspirin or other NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs), including: Ibuprofen, Motrin & Advil, until all bruising and swelling have resolved. You may take Tylenol, however very rarely do patients require any medication for pain after dermal fillers.
Dermal filler patients should not engage in intense physical or aerobic activity. Hot showers/baths, as well as other activities that result in sweating should also be avoided. Additionally, dermal filler patients must avoid consuming alcohol in the days leading up to their treatment.
Very gently massage any small bumps or nodules that may appear during the next 24 hours, unless your aftercare instructions say not to. Note: do NOT massage areas of Botox injection.
For the first two nights after undergoing dermal filler injections, patients should avoid laying facedown on the treatment area. Failure to do so may not only result in additional swelling but may also dislodge the product from it’s intended area.
For the first few days after dermal filler injections, the treatment area may feel somewhat firm. This is normal and will soften and appear more natural over time.
One must be gentle when washing the area injected with dermal fillers. It is important to avoid aggressively rubbing a dermal filler treatment area.
Additionally, dermal filler patients should avoid lengthy exposure to UV rays for the first two weeks after their procedure, as well as saunas and steam baths. After getting dermal fillers, patients should avoid wearing makeup for an absolute minimum of four hours after their treatment.
