Hand Filler FAQs
Like the skin on the face and neck, the hands are also likely to become thinner and more wrinkled as one gets older – adding years to one’s appearance. Since the hands are an extremely visible part of the body – and can’t practically be covered up with clothing – aging hands can be very upsetting.
The good news is that the anti-aging experts at AMAE Med Spa in the Rochester Hills area can help restore your hands to youthful clarity, smoothness, and plumpness! We offer the best, state-of-the-art technologies in dermal fillers that can turn back time by rejuvenating the appearance of aging hands.
In this article the dermal filler experts at AMAE Med Spa answer our patients most frequently asked questions about hand fillers.
How Do Hand Fillers Improve the Appearance of Hands?
Dermal fillers can decrease the visibility of several different age-related changes in men’s or women’s hands.
To begin with, dermal fillers restore lost volume to the hands. As a person ages they will naturally lose volume in their hands. The skin itself becomes thinner and less elastic. But the tissue in the hand also reduces with age – just as it does in the face.
As a result, the skin on the hands begins to wrinkle, knuckles and joints begin to protrude and the veins and tendons beneath the skin begin to bulge.
Dermal fillers are injected to restore this lost volume, which gives your hands a plumper, more attractive look. Knuckles no longer look “knobby”, skin becomes smoother and the tendons and large, blue veins on the back of the hands become less noticeable.
Additionally, the opaque dermal filler gel that integrates into the tissues under the surface of the skin can conceal the prominence of the blue color of veins on the back of the hands.
Which Filler Is Best for Hands?
Just as there are multiple brands and formulas of facial filler, there are also different formulations of hand fillers.
One dermal filler treatment with dramatic and long-lasting anti-aging effects for the hands is Juvéderm Vollure – a dermal filler that uses Allergan’s patented Vycross™ Technology. Dr. Ali has used Juvéderm Vollure safely and effectively for several years to treat volume loss and signs of aging in the hands with great results.
Juvéderm Vollure works by absorbing water – so it stays very smooth. And Vollure can plump hands for up to one year!
Restylane, in addition to retaining water, also helps stimulate the body’s own natural production of collagen – which can result in even longer-lasting results – and has been shown in some clinical studies to last as long as 18 months! However, Restylane’s molecular structure is more granular in nature. So, for some patients, skin texture and evenness may not be as smooth as Vollure.
Radiesse is another filler that can be used to make your hands look plumper and more youthful. Instead of using hyaluronic acid, Radiesse uses very small spheres of calcium hydroxylapatite. These spheres are combined with gel in order to make a thick, firm filler for hands. In addition to immediately plumping hands, the microspheres will help the body grow new collagen fibers.
Dr. Ali or one of our experienced nurse injectors will help you decide which is the best hand filler formula for your unique hand concerns and aesthetic goals.
Who is a Good Candidate for Hand Fillers?
Almost anyone who has experienced volume loss in their hands is a good candidate for hand fillers. Since all of these fillers contain biocompatible ingredients, they are very safe for most people. In fact, the hyaluronic acid used in Juvéderm fillers is a sugar molecule virtually identical to one produced by the body.
Dr. Ali or one of our nurse injectors will ask you about any medical issues or conditions that affect your hands (such as arthritis, keloid scars, etc.) as well as any past hand injuries. While most people are good candidates for hand fillers, patients with bleeding issues or a history of herpes may not be good patients for this treatment.
What Happen During the Hand Filler Injection Appointment?
After reviewing your medical background, we simply will gently clean your hands. Anesthetic is generally not needed because there aren’t many nerves in the back of the hand. Hand filler injections are significantly less painful than facial injections.
After injecting the hand filler, we may gently massage your hands, to ensure that the filler is evenly distributed throughout the tissues. Once we have finished massaging the hands, patients can drive themselves back to their home or workplace.
Is there any Downtime After Hand Fillers?
No! Patients do not need to take time off from their job or daily activities after hand filler injections. However, during the next 24 hours, you shouldn’t exert yourself or perspire – so don’t go on a run, cycle or exercise class for a day. Also avoid any activities that will expose your hands to intense or direct sunlight for the next day or two.
How Fast Are Hand Filler Results?
Hand filler results are immediate – so patients will notice an immediate improvement in the fullness of their hands. If Radiesse or Restylane formulas are used, the benefits may continue to improve over time, as the body is also stimulated to make more natural collagen in the treated area.
How Long do Hand Filler Results Last?
This will depend on the hand filler formula that is used, as well as certain lifestyle issues that affect your hand usage. Because the fillers are absorbed by the body and eliminated over time, a person with less “wear and tear” on their hands will generally see longer lasting results.
However, typically, the fullness in hands may last for 12 to 18 months after one gets hand filler injections.
