The Strange History of Lip Fillers
Lip fillers are almost synonymous with today’s models and “influencers.” When we think of today’s most popular actresses or celebrities – like Kylie Jenner, Cara Delevingne or Bella Haddid – we immediately envision their full, sexy pouts. And, we all know that they weren’t born with such luscious lips!
In fact, “lip fillers” are the most Googled beauty treatment in almost any given week. And the interest in lip fillers continues to grow! Google searches for lip fillers are ten times higher today than they were four years ago. But most people don’t realize that lip fillers have been around for more than one hundred years!
In this article the lip enhancement experts at AMAE Med Spa in the Troy, MI area take you back through time on a fascinating journey through the history of lip fillers – from 19th century failed attempts to today’s advanced and long lasting lip filler technologies.
The First Lip Fillers
In the 1800s, before there was a TB vaccine, tuberculosis ravaged the country. And one horrifying side effect was oral lesions that disfigured the patient’s mouth. By the early 1900s doctors were performing experimental lip augmentation using fat transfer, as a form of cosmetic reconstruction of these deformities. But the technology wasn’t there yet, and these early lip filler procedures demonstrated limited, if any, success.
As the industrial revolution progressed, people had more expendable income for cosmetic treatments. Throughout the rest of the 20th century, doctors had tried injecting a wide variety of substances into the lips. After the failed fat transfers, came the injection of liquid paraffin. But using wax to plump lips was a massive failure, as well, as one might imagine.
Lip Fillers in the 60s & 70s
In the 1960s and silicone entered the slip filler scene, and the so-called ‘trout pout’ became briefly popular. But the dangerous side effects of injecting silicone directly into the body, now widely recognized, led to the procedure being quickly abandoned for health and safety reasons.
Throughout the 70s cosmetic surgeons continued to experiment with different lip fillers – even injecting bovine collagen (cow fat) into the lips!
Lip Fillers in the 90s
In the 1990s, with the introduction of human collagen lip fillers, lip augmentation finally took off in a big way. But, even then the science was inexact and very expensive. Only the wealthy could afford lip fillers in the 1990s. And because the procedure required a minor surgery of sorts, the treatments came with prolonged bruising, swelling and significant downtime.
Even worse, lip filler results in the 1990s were often exaggerated and very unnatural looking – creating so-called “duck lips”. Many people remember how this generation of imperfect lip fillers were soundly satired by Goldie Hawn in the brilliant comedy First Wives Club in 1996.
Modern Lip Fillers
Thanks to today’s state-of-the-art lip filler technologies, lip augmentation is now safe, affordable, natural looking – and requires no real downtime.
Juvéderm, the world’s most popular lip filler – and others like it – are made of hyaluronic acid. This is a substance that is naturally occurring in the body. As a result it is extremely safe and yields very natural looking results.
Because hyaluronic acid lip fillers contain substances similar to those found in the body, an allergic reaction is very unlikely. And, the addition of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to lip filler formulas makes the procedure a relatively pain free experience.
Modern lip fillers like Juvéderm Volbella and Ultra XC can also now last up to a year or longer.
