What’s the Best Way to Get Rid of a Double Chin:
Lipo, CoolSculpting or Kybella?
New non-surgical technologies such as Kybella Injections and CoolSculpting “fat freezing” can now reduce or eliminate the “submental” fat commonly known as a “double chin”. But which procedure is better? And which treatment is right for you?
As the Birmingham, MI area’s leading provider of Kybella, Liposuctioin and Coolsculpting treatments, we have helped hundreds of individuals achieve a slimmer face and more defined jawline. In this article board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali compares Kybella injections with Liposuction and CoolSculpting fat-freezing.
Liposuction for Double Chin
Liposuction was originally developed for use as a body contouring technique, but modern liposuction technology now makes it an ideal tool for sculpting the face, neck and double chin.
In double chin liposuction, a surgeon uses a special tiny tube (called a “micro-cannula”) attached to a gentle suction-syringe or pump to “suck” the fat cells from the chin area.
A local anesthetic is required for liposuction. However there is very minimal “downtime” or recovery time. Additionally, there are no scars with facial liposuction.
Unlike CoolSculpting or Kybella, liposuction requires only one treatment, and the results are visible as soon as swelling subsides.
Coolsculpting for Double Chin
CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that literally freezes unwanted fat. The FDA has recently approved CoolSculpting for treatments of smaller areas of the body, including under the chin.
A new, smaller state-of-the art applicator called the CoolMini targets fat cells in the double chins area to freeze them off. The dead fat cells are then gradually expelled from the body through natural processes.
Because it takes a while for the body to absorb and eliminate the frozen fat cells, patients don’t typically begin to see results until 4 to 5 weeks after CoolSculpting. And it may take 3 to 5 months to deliver final results.
Many CoolSculpting patients will also require more than one treatment in order to achieve their final desired result. So, while CoolSculpting is less invasive, less uncomfortable, and has virtually no downtime, results take much longer to be visible than Lipo.
Kybella for Double Chin
Kybella is performed through a series of injections that “dissolve” the fat cells in the double chin. The destroyed fat cells are slowly eliminated by the body’s natural metabolic processes.
Most Kybella patients see a 50 percent fat reduction after just two sessions, and a 70 percent reduction after four – with full results after six Kybella treatments. Treatments are typically spaced one month apart. So complete results from Kybella may not be observable for six months or longer.
Because Kybella is injectable, it can treat smaller, more precise or isolated areas of the double chin – while CoolSculpting and Lipo treat the whole area, rather than smaller targeted areas.
What is better: Lipo, Kybella or CoolSculpting for Double Chins?
In all three treatments – Coolsculpting, Liposuction and Kybella – the fat cells are detroyed and removed. So the results are permanent with all three procedures, and your double chin will not recur. All three procedures can dramatically improve the chin area, and substantially define the jawline.
There is no incision, no anesthesia, and no downtime with either Kybella or CoolSculpting. Local anesthetic is required for liposuction, and you may require pain medications and the use of a compression garment while you are recovering from Lipo.
In short, Lipo yields the fastest results, but is the most invasive and the least comfortable.
Individuals who dislike needles – or who don’t want to schedule multiple sessions or wait 6 months – may prefer to avoid Kybella.
CoolScupting may be preferable for patients with loose or mature skin, as it has recently been proven to offer skin tightening effects on “lax” neck skin.
