PRP Telogen Effluvium Hair Loss Treatment
Telogen effluvium, or TE, is a condition where a change occurs in the number of hair follicles that grow the hair. It is believed to be the second most common cause of hair loss.
“Telogen” is a medical term that refers to the dormant, or resting phase of hair growth. During the resting phase, the number of “active” follicles (those that produce hair) declines significantly. When this happens, the volume of hair reduces, and hair becomes thinner.
Usually, TE hair loss is temporary, but even so, it can still last for a year or even more.
A new, state-of-the-art hair loss treatment called Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment (“PRP”) is now available, giving hope to those suffering from TE. PRP is very effective at treating the many causes of telogen effluvium hair loss. Dr. Ali is one of the few doctors in the entire Birmingham, Michigan area to offer this new and highly effective hair loss treatment.
Telogen Effluvium Hair Loss Symptoms
Telogen effluvium causes a reduction, or thinning, of the number of hairs on the scalp. Most often, it affects the top of the scalp, but in some cases, may occur either in patches or over the entire scalp.
TE generally is not the cause of receding hairlines or complete baldness. However, in some severe cases, it may cause hair on other parts of the body to fall out.
Telogen Effluvium Hair Loss Causes
There are many factors that can trigger telogen effluvium hair loss. Exposure to toxins or heavy metals can cause hair follicles to enter a prolonged resting state. A severe injury, blood loss, surgery or other trauma to the body could cause TE hair loss as well.
Conditions that alter hormone levels such as pregnancy can also result in telogen effluvium hair loss. In fact, TE is quite common in pregnancy, and can result in hair loss for up to a year after the delivery.
Medications can also be a factor. Certain prescriptions such as antidepressants, anti-hypertensive drugs and oral contraceptives may trigger TE hair loss, as can vitamin or nutritional deficiencies.
PRP Telogen Effluvium Hair Loss Treatment
During the PRP treatment, blood is drawn from the patient in Dr. Ali’s office. Then, the blood is put through a centrifuge, which extracts the plasma. This plasma contains a concentrated amount of the body’s growth factors – perhaps up to 8 times the concentration found in regular blood.
Dr. Ali marks out sections of the scalp that need treatment, and the platelet-rich plasma is then injected into those areas. The patient’s own concentrated growth factor then stimulates the dormant hair follicles to begin producing thicker and more voluminous hair again.
Because this treatment is completely natural and uses only the body’s own growth factors, there are no risks or complications. It is completely safe even after surgery, during pregnancy, when nursing, or when taking other medications!
