What Is an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Facial?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. This facial treatment -sometimes called a “photofacial” – is a safe, effective and affordable procedure for erasing sun damage. IPL facials can also reduce redness (rosacea), minimize visible blood vessels or capillaries, fade dark spots, treat acne, and much more.
Many spas and salons offer regular facials and chemical peels – but only a Medical Spa can offer the amazing advantages of an IPL facial. One of the greatest benefits of IPL photofacials is that the results are dramatic and generally typically last for years.
In this article we explain how IPL facials work and what you can expect during your Intense Pulsed Light Facial in our luxurious ne Birmingham Med Spa.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Facial
IPL facials uses high-intensity pulses of specific light frequencies to collapse blood vessels that are visible through the skin, and to repair damaged skin cells. This “photo rejuvenation” technique stimulates the production of new skin cells and collagen, resulting in younger, “plumper”, healthier looing skin.
More specifically, a handheld device is employed to send energy into the skin, where it selectively targets and is absorbed by certain cells. For example, the red oxyhemoglobin in blood or pigmented cells in darker spots absorbs certain light frequencies, which heat, kill and eliminate the darker skin.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Facial sessions generally only take 30 minutes or less, and require no downtime. There is minimal to no discomfort. Any minor redness, swelling, or irritation that appears can be reduced by applying cold packs to the area – and should resolve in a matter of hours.

Nordlys IPL Photofacial
At AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI we offer the state-of-the-art Nordlys laser IPL system. This advanced skin rejuvenation treatment delivers direct controlled, target-specific pulses of light to the upper skin layer. The light is absorbed by the pigment in facial discolorations, while leaving the rest of the skin unharmed.
The laser light energy is absorbed by the melanin (brown pigment) in age spots, sun spots and melasma; and by the red pigmentation (hemoglobin) in the the red blood cells. These pigments utilize the light energy and convert it into heat, which destroys the cells where unwanted pigmentation is stored. Only fresh clear skin is left – for a flawless complexion and a more youthful appearance.
