Should I Get a Chemical Peel?
At AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI chemical peels have always been one of our most popular skin care treatments! With a variety of applications – from reducing wrinkles and lines, to treating acne, and eliminating scars and a dark spots – we offer chemical peels for men, women and teens.
However, during the pandemic, chemical peels have become even more popular than ever – due to the adverse effects that facemasks have on facial skin. Many people who never had acne or clogged pores before, are now experiencing skin problems due to the effects of wearing facial masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. And, other people who already had pre-existing skin problems are finding that face masks are aggravating them.
For this reason, many of our Birmingham, MI area patients are discovering the benefits of chemical peels for the first time! If you are looking for a fast, affordable and effective way to improve your skin, in this article we answer some of our patients most common questions about chemical peels.
What happens during a chemical peel?
Prior to getting a chemical peel at our Birmingham, MI Med Spa, the skin is sanitized to remove any makeup, lotions and oils. This is because oil and other surface coatings can act as a barrier and prevent the acid from penetrating deeply.
Next, the eyes, mouth and nose are all areas to which a protective ointment is applied, this prevents the peel from affecting these sensitive areas of the face. After prepping the skin, the specially selected chemicals are applied.
Depending on the type of chemical peel and its potency, the amount of time it stays on varies. Mild or superficial peels will neutralize after some time, which allows them to simply be washed off. Stronger or “deeper” peels, however, must have a neutralizing agent applied to stop its process.
The chemicals applied during the peel will begin to literally break down exposed dead skin cells, dirt, debris, oil (sebum) and bacteria. This unclogs and minimizes pores, diminishes uneven skin tone, resurfaces scars and rough surfaces, and leaves skin glowing and fresh..
With deeper chemicals peels, the process also causes controlled microscopic “injury “to the skin, which activates the body’s own cellular repair and skin rejuvenation processes. This stimulates the skin to build new collagen and elastin on a cellular level. This regenerates and rejuvenates the skin, making it appear fresh, new, tight, plump and smooth.
Do at-home chemical peels work?
“Do it Yourself” (or DIY) chemical peels are far less effective, and provide less dramatic results. Ordinary retail peels sold “over the counter” are simply no where nearly not as strong as chemical peels available in a doctor’s office or medical spa.
The sort of peels available to non-professionals will have similar effects to face scrubs or exfoliants. While there is still a benefit to using at home peels, they are no substitute for the strength and effectiveness of a medical grade chemical peel that you can receive in our Birmingham, MI Med Spa.
Patients over the age of 40 typically begin to lose a lot more collagen, elastin and oil – and so they can benefit from changing from an at-home physical scrub to a medical spa chemical peel. Not only does a clinical grade chemical peel stimulate collagen production, it is actually better for the skin. This is because there is less pulling and irritating of the skin than with at home masks.
Additionally, clinical peels include specially formulated, customizable skin nutrients – based on the patient’s unique skin condition and concerns.
Should I get a chemical peel?
Almost anyone with clogged pores, dull dry skin, age-related lines or wrinkles, scarring due to acne, dark spots or sun damage is good candidates for chemical peels. However, some people with darker complexions may experience hyperpigmentation or scarring, and may be better treated with other skin care options offered in our Birmingham, MI medical spa.
When considering a chemical peel, remember: the deeper the facial peel, the more dramatic the improvement to the skin, but the longer the downtime. Our skilled aestheticians will help you select the peel type and depth that is right for your individual skincare needs and your lifestyle.
