How to Make Facial Fillers & Botox Results Last Longer
Many women (and men!) consider Botox and Facial Fillers the best investment they can make in themselves, their relationships and even their careers! Safe and long lasting injectable treatments can build your self-esteem and give you confidence.
Botox and fillers can help you look better in Zoom meetings and on dating apps, too! And, in today’s youth-oriented job market, Botox and Facial Filler anti-aging treatments can help keep you competitive with your younger colleagues.
But, as with any investment, you want to protect what you have invested – and ensure that you get the most you can for your money!
In this article renowned Troy, MI area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali and our skilled and experienced nurse injectors give you some tips to help make your injectable cosmetic treatments last as long as possible.
Making Facial Fillers Last
Choosing the right product or formulation is the first step to long lasting fillers – since different injectable products have different life spans. The thicker the filler, the more slowly it will be absorbed into the body – so discuss your options and expectations with Dr. Ali or your nurse before starting.
With proper care, many filler products can last much longer than the ‘official time’ given – and some filler products can last years.
Hydration is the next consideration in maintaining long-lasting filler plumpness. Drinking plenty of water, applying hyaluronic products morning and night, and observing a healthy diet helps maintain hydration and prolong filler longevity.
Exfoliation can also help the skin from drying out prematurely. For lips, gently exfoliate them in the morning with a dry toothbrush and apply lip balm throughout the day. For the rest of the skin, consider a gentle exfoliating cleanser from a medical grade skincare brand, such as Alastin or ZO. Our staff can recommend the best products to help boost and maintain your fillers.
But do not over-exfoliate with aggressive products or too-frequent treatments. Doing so can break down the skin’s protective barrier and cause moisture loss.
If you are a smoker, getting fillers is great incentive to quit. Smoking accelerates the breaking down of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin – accelerating the return of sagging skin and wrinkles.
Additionally, try not to rub your face. Eventually the hyaluronic acid in fillers (the natural sugar molecule that absorbs moisture) will be absorbed by the body. Extensive rubbing, touching, or even sleeping on your side is believed to hasten the breakdown of fillers.
More Ways to Make Facial Fillers Last longer
Speaking of sleep – getting enough is very beneficial to maintaining youthful skin. Sleep is when the body has a chance to repair itself.
Good nutrition is also essential to helping skin remain plump and youthful. Add dark and healthy fats (like nuts, avocado, and salmon) to your meals whenever possible.
And of course, avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen, because UV light promotes the breakdown of dermal collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid at a higher rate than normal aging.
Prolonging Botox Results
While you can help make fillers last longer, prolonging the life of your Botox is trickier. How soon a patients’ Botox wears off is dependent on a number of variables, which can affect every one differently.
Keeping your skin hydrated can help make the visible results of Botox last longer, since the appearance of ‘returning fine lines’ can be exacerbated by dehydration. A good hyaluronic acid-based serum and moisturizer, drinking plenty of water, eating fruits and vegetables, and keeping coffee and alcohol to a minimum can help keep the skin from dehydration.
Also, wearing sunglasses to help avoid squinting, can also help keep lines from reappearing. And if you are a smoker, try to cut back or stop completely. Smoking not only damages skin cells and accelerates skin aging, but also causes expressions that contract the eyes and lips, which can cause new lines.
