FDA Approves Facial Filler for Under-Eye Circles

Under-eye circles are a troublesome aesthetic concern for many people. In fact, under eye area is one of the most frequently requested treatment areas among patients at AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI – regardless of age, race, or gender.

Concealers rarely cover darkness below the eyes complete. And, until recently, there were really no effective treatments to remedy under-eye circles. But there is great news on the horizon! This month Allergan Aesthetics announced that the FDA has approved the use of Juvéderm® Volbella XC (in adults over the age of 21) for improvement of dark circles in the “infraorbital hollows” under the eyes.

Causes of Under-eye Circles

Dark circles can be caused by pigmentation, but the most common cause of dark circles is facial anatomy.  Eyes can be “sunken” due to heredity at any age – or can result from volume loss under the eyes due to aging or weight loss.  “Sunken” eye sockets can lead to shadowing that appears as dark circles under their eyes, as well as thinner skin in the area that enables veins to show through.

Fatigue, stress, exhaustion of the muscles around the eye, alcohol consumption, smoking, and excessive intake of caffeinated beverages can also make dark circles under the eyes worse.

Treating Under-eye Circles with Juvéderm Volbella XC

The under-eye is a very delicate area to treat and requires expert technique from a highly skilled provider.

Juvéderm® Volbella XC first gained FDA approval in 2016 for use in the lips and the vertical lines above the lips (perioral rhytids).  In February 2022 it was also approved for injection into the tear troughs to treat under-eye circles.

The Juvéderm® Volbella XC formula has lower amounts of hyaluronic acid molecules and low water affinity, which provides a soft, smooth consistency that is appropriate for treating under eye hollows. It’s thin, pliable, smooth texture is what gives the product a natural look and feel in both the lip area as well as in the tear troughs.

According to clinical trial data released by Allergan Aesthetics, 90% of patients reported satisfaction with Juvéderm® Volbella XC under-eye treatment after one year – and said they would recommend the treatment to a friend.

Side effects in the majority of patients in the clinical trials experienced only major side effects, such as injection site tenderness, bruising, swelling, and redness. Allergan Aesthetics notes that a majority of these side effects were “easily tolerated”. Allergic reactions and other more serious side-effects are extremely rare because hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar molecule that is found in the body.

While all hyaluronic acid (HA) based fillers are temporary, Juvéderm is one of the longest lasting HA fillers on the market. Based on the clinical studies, patients reported that Juvéderm® Volbella XC results lasted for at least 12 months, and in many cases even longer.

The benefits of Volbella XC Under-eye circle treatment include a more youthful and less tired appearance, as well as increased self-esteem and confidence.

Typically, one syringe of Volbella XC is all that is needed – making it a fairly affordable treatment. And there is little to no downtime, with most patients who receive the injections resuming work and other regular activities the following day.
