Millennial Skin Care Trend: “Prejuvenation”
Many of us are familiar with the old adage “It’s easier to do something right the first time, than to fix it after it’s been done wrong.” And, perhaps being smarter than previous generations, millennials realize that this principal applies to skin care as well.
This year the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery released the results of a study indicating that nearly 70 percent of consumers are considering undergoing non-invasive aesthetic treatments. But what may be surprising, is that 73 percent of survey respondents desired preventative skin care treatments – especially millennials.
Nicknamed “prejuvenation” for prevention + rejuvenation – this concept actually makes a great deal of sense. Having noninvasive treatments at a younger age, will preserve the skin’s youthful appearance and help prevent the need for surgical or invasive procedures down the line.
Why Millennials Love “Prejuvenation” Skin Care
While older generations grew up in an era without lasers, stem cell and radiofrequency skin treatments, the millennial generation is the first to have grown up without knowing any different. Additionally, the omnipresent magnifying glass of constant social media makes millennials much more aware of their overall appearance – and their skin in particular – than any previous generation.
Not only are millennials more aware of the availability of preventative aesthetic treatments, they also consider them a normal part of everyday life – and not a “luxury” like they may seem to older generations. And so the desire for ‘tweak-ments’ – or multiple small procedures to stave off any drastic rejuvenations – are growing in popularity.
Prejuvenation Skin Care With Botox
Botox is one of the most popular prejuvenation treatments among millennials – with many women, and some men, starting Botox injections as early as their late twenties or early thirties. While this may seem shocking to older generations, clinical studies have proven that early use of Botox actually prevents wrinkles from forming.
Beginning Botox at an earlier age can stop wrinkles from forming in the first place – and prevents lines from becoming “etched” into the skin. Weakening facial muscles at a younger age prevents new wrinkles from becoming deeper, and so will intervention will be necessary as the person gets older.
Prejuvenation Skin Care With PRP
The PRP facial became popular with millennials a few years ago when reality stars like Kim Kardashian sensationalized this so-called “Vampire Facial” ® and showcased the procedure on social media.
PRP Facials use plasma extracted from the patient’s own blood to create a skin rejuvenating serum. The PRP delivers the body’s own natural healing and restorative elements to the skin to stimulate regeneration of the facial tissue on a cellular level.
And while the science behind the “bloody” PRP facial may seem strange to many, it is based on stem cell technology – which is well understood and accepted by millennials.
Prejuvenation with Skin Nutrition
Millennials are also more aware than previous generations of the necessity of skin nourishment. Just as many millennials are more aware of what they put in their bodies, they are also more cognizant of what they put on their skin.
As a result the prejuvenation skin care trend also encompasses the use of high quality, medical-grade skin products that contain the nutritive elements for maintaining healthy skin. At AMAE Med Spa we have many millennial patients who rely on our popular Alastin and ZO Health by Dr. Obagi skin care products to stave off sun and environmental damage before it occurs – rather than waiting to try and reverse skin damage down the road after it happens.
