How To Care For Your Lips After Lip Filler Injections
It’s a very personal decision when it comes to enhancing your facial features. So congratulations on making the move to fuller and more youthful looking lips obtained with hyaluronic acid lip fillers!. The talented team at our West Bloomfield area Med Spa will ensure you’re completely satisfied with the results of your new lip fillers!
After treatment care is extremely important following any injection-based lip filler procedure. And some mild side effects may occur that can be easily managed by taking the proper pre and post-treatment directions as outlined by your doctor.
Here are some helpful guidelines to keep in mind for lip care after getting lip fillers. However, always follow your own doctor’s specific aftercare instructions, for the best results.
Lip Filler Aftercare
Patients should understand that because lip fillers aren’t permanent, their side effects aren’t either. That creates peace of mind should a patient experience minor complications or irritation after receiving their lip filler injection. Most side effects are temporary and can be managed with a little self-care.
Tenderness or pain that results from minor bruising or swelling, along with redness around the treatment area are the most common side effects experienced after a lip filler procedure.
Even in the most talented of hands, patients will most likely experience some level of bruising and swelling after the injection. Symptoms only last a few days, but patients can take some simple measures to help reduce any reaction and stay comfortable.
Patients who bruise easily should supplement their diet with Arnica for 2 to 3 days before their procedure because it helps arrest bruising. To help with any bruising or discomfort, a bag of frozen vegetables (or ice) can work wonders if it’s gently applied to the injection area as a cool compress. Be sure not to use pressure on the injection site – and never place the ice directly against the skin.
Let the treatments settle in. Patients should try not to pucker or purse their lips for up to 48 hours and should minimize their facial expressions if possible. It’s very important that patients resist the urge to massage the injection area, which could move the fillers. Likewise, don’t exercise heavily for at least 24 hours after treatment and be sure to drink lots of fluids to help with recovery.
Patients should keep their body comfortable for several days following the procedure. Stay out of the sun until any bruising is gone. And it’s okay to take an anti-inflammatory medication like Aleve for any discomfort. Try sleeping with a few extra pillows to keep your head elevated, too!
What To Avoid After Getting Lip Fillers
Our West Bloomfield area Med Spa staff want to deliver the most positive lip filler experience possible. So we ask patients to avoid the following actions for a few days prior to and after their lip filler treatment to prevent unnecessary swelling, bruising, etc.
Should there be any temporary discomfort after the procedure, it’s fine to take an anti-inflammatory following the treatment. However, any supplement like Vitamin E, fish oil, gingko biloba, garlic pills, ginseng or St. John’s Wort should be avoided before and after treatment, as each has side effects that include blood thinning.
Prescription medications like Warfarin should not be taken for a few days leading up to the procedure but are okay to resume immediately following treatment. Always consult with your primary care physician before stopping or starting prescription medications.
While it’s tempting to celebrate, patients should not drink alcohol before or right after their treatment. And of course, touching or massaging the treatment area is completely off limits, too.
Any injection site discomfort should be temporary and any lingering side effects following treatment should improve by at least 50% within 3 days after the procedure. If not, patients should call our West Bloomfield area Med Spa with any concerns.
It’s an exciting time for patients who decide to reward themselves with lip enhancement. Fuller, more beautiful lips help strengthen a person’s confidence and bring joy every time they look in the mirror. Simply call our West Bloomfield area AMAE Med Spa to get started.
