Lip Fillers: Know When to Say “When”

Injectable fillers like Ultra, Volbella, and Juvederm all can be used to add volume to the lips during lip augmentation procedures. But a recent study reported by JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, reveals plastic surgeons agree that to prevent unnatural appearances after a lip augmentation procedure there is an optimal amount of lip filler to use.

If too much lip filler is injected the patient may be left with unnatural exaggerated lips that can detract from her appearance, rather than enhance it.

How People Perceive Lip Fillers

In order to achieve the best results for their patients, medical experts wanted to understand what perceptions were when it came to a natural lip appearance. To that end, 98 men and women volunteers were asked to study photos of a female model’s lips. In each set of photos, the model’s lips had been digitally altered in 5 areas – the lower lip, the upper lip, the Cupid’s bow, and the upper and lower lips combined.

Participants then used an online survey to view the photos in random order over a two-month period. Each photo had associated questionnaires, which the survey respondents completed based on if they thought the lips had been augmented, and if so, did they feel the lips were appealing and natural or did they seem artificial and obviously enhanced.

Research participants were asked to judge the photos based on their personal feelings of what natural lips looked like. Fifty percent of those surveyed thought the model’s lips looked unnatural if the size ratio between the top and bottom lips varied outside of a very narrow acceptable range.

If both lips were enhanced in proportion to one another the results were considered to be more believable, as well as more attractive. And nearly any enhancement that obscured or altered the “Cupid’s bow” – however minor – was judged as looking unnatural, as well.

Lip augmentation that was considered to look the most natural typically involved modification of both the upper and lower lips. The bottom line being that beauty is not just a matter of how much lip filler you use – it is also a matter of proportion.
