Natural PRP Treatment for Pregnancy Hair Loss
The miracle of having a baby is a life-changing event. However, a few of those life changes may not be as welcome as is your little bundle of joy. Childbirth can bring about some rather alarming, albeit generally temporary changes in a women’s body. You are probably prepared for the challenge of weight gain, morning sickness, and aches and pains. What you may not expect, however, is the possibility of hair loss that may occur during or after pregnancy.
As with other less pleasant side effects of pregnancy, this type of hair loss is usually temporary. But it may take from 6 month to a year before your hair begins to grow back and return to normal.
The good news is, now there’s help for pregnancy hair loss. The new, completely natural PRP treatment for pregnancy hair loss is now available in our Birmingham, Michigan medical spa.
Causes of Hair Loss During Pregnancy
It may surprise you to know that hair growth is cyclical. At any given time, approximately 90% of a person’s hair is in a growth cycle, while the rest of the follicles are in a resting phase. Then, about every two to three months, the “resting” hair sheds, or falls out. Finally, a new hair grows in its place from the now empty follicle.
In pregnancy, however, hormone fluctuations disrupts this cycle, causing a larger number of a woman’s hair follicles to go into the resting phase. Then, as hairs fall out, the follicles fail to produce new hairs, resulting in sparse, thinner hair.
Pregnancy related hair loss is known as telogen effluvium, or “TE”. It is quite common, perhaps affecting up to 40% of pregnant women. TE can occur any time during the pregnancy, or even from one to five months after delivery.
Pregnancy is not the only factor that can cause telogen effluvium. Many medical conditions, such as traumatic injury, blood loss, heavy metal poisoning, and even certain medications can resulting in thinning hair.
PRP is 100% Natural Treatment for TE Pregnancy Hair Loss
There are various topical or oral medications for hair loss that may be considered for patients with non-pregnancy related TE. Chemical treatments, however, cannot be used by either pregnant or nursing women.
Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment (“PRP”) is a relatively new, state-of-the-art treatment that is welcome news for those suffering from pregnancy related hair loss. It is very effective in treating TE, and is completely safe for pregnant or nursing mothers because it uses just the body’s own platelets.
Birmingham, Michigan Dr. Ali is one of the very few plastic surgeons in the area to offer this innovative, chemical-free, completely safe and natural hair loss treatment.
During the PRP treatment, blood is drawn from the patient in Dr. Ali’s office. Then, the blood is put through a centrifuge, which extracts the plasma. This plasma contains a concentrated amount of the body’s growth factors – perhaps up to 8 times the concentration in regular blood.
Dr. Ali marks out sections of the scalp that need treatment, and the platelet-rich plasma is then injected into those areas. The patient’s own concentrated growth factor then stimulates the dormant hair follicles to begin producing thicker and more voluminous hair again.
Because the treatment is completely natural and solely derived from the woman’s own blood cells, it provides no risk for either baby or mother during any stage of pregnancy or afterwards, even while nursing.
