LATISSE for Longer Eyelashes: FAQs (Part 2)
LATISSE received FDA approval in December 2008 to help women and men grow thicker, longer, fuller eyelashes – and is now available in person and online at AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI.
In this article, board certified Birmingham, MI plastic surgeon Dr. Ali discusses how LATISSE can reverse the effects of sparse eyelashes (“hypotrichosis”) and help patients grow the long, thick, beautiful eyelashes they have always wanted.

How was LATISSE discovered?
The story of the LATISSE solution begins in 2001, with the development of a medicated eye drop designed to treat elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Patients who used the IOP eye drop soon began to notice their eyelashes growing long, fuller, and darker. Consequently, the eye drop’s manufacturer, Allergan, began to study the active ingredient of the eye drop – bimatoprost – and its application as a treatment for hypotrichosis.
Once its safety and effectiveness for eyelash growth was proven in a clinical trial, the FDA approved LATISSE as a hypotrichosis treatment in December of 2008.
Is LATISSE safe?
Yes. LATISSE® has been FDA approved since 2008. The side effects (below) are rare and typically minor. If LATISSE gets into the eye, it is not expected to cause harm, and the eye should not be rinsed. Excess LATISSE should simply be “blotted” off with a clean tissue.
Are there side effects with LATISSE?
Some minor side-effects of LATISSE include:
- darkening of the eyelid skin – often reversible;
- increased brown pigmentation of the iris (colored part of the eye) – typically permanent;
- hair growth in other areas of the skin that LATISSE® frequently touches – so blot any excess solution.
In recent clinical trials less than 4% of patients, experienced some redness or itchiness of the eyes.
Are there precautions before applying LATISSE?
It is important to remove make-up before application, so that the LATISSE can reach the hair follicles. Only apply LATISSE® using the FDA-approved sterile applicators included with the LATISSE solution – as these are specifically designed to apply LATISSE safely and properly. Do NOT use Q-tips or makeup brushes to apply LATISSE®.
If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying LATISSE. You may reinsert your contacts 15 minutes after applying LATISSE®.
Can a wear Mascara with LATISSE?
Yes, patients can apply mascara in addition to LATISSE® solution – once the solution has completely dried.
How soon will I see results from LATISSE?
The LATISSE® solution works gradually. Many patients see noticeably longer lashes after about a month. Most people will experience full LATISSE results in approximately four months. As everyone’s hair grows differently, results will vary from patient to patient.
It’s important use LATISSE® every day for 16 weeks to experience full results. Do not reduce or stop daily application when you notice results! After the first 16 week treatment period Dr. Ali will discuss ongoing use of LATISSE with you depending upon your individual results.
