Laser Hair Removal Frequently Asked Questions (Part 1)
If you are considering laser hair removal, we are sure that you have questions about the treatment process. In this article we answer the most common questions about laser hair removal.
How does laser hair removal work?
At our Birmingham Medical Spa we off laser hair removal that uses an invisible (and painless) beam of light to destroy hair follicles at the roots.
Pigment is the substance that gives hair color. The frequency of light that is emitted by the laser is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicles – but not absorbed by the skin.
When the pigment within the hair follicles absorbs the laser light, the follicle is destroyed by the heat and it is permanently unable to grow hair!
How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?
Laser treatment destroys the growth of hair follicles when they are in the “anagen” early growth phase. Since not all hair follicles are at this stage at the same time, multiple laser sessions are typically required for complete permanent hair removal.
Many clients experience a complete and permanent reduction of unwanted hair in as few as 3 treatments – while some patients with more hair follicles may need up to 5 treatments.
Laser hair removal treatments are usually spaced four to six weeks apart to ensure that all of the hair follicles are treated in the proper growth phase.
Are there side effects to laser hair removal?
When performed by a medical professional, there is no recovery period, no down time and virtually no side effects. You can return to your normal daily activities immediately.
Some people experience a slight redness – like a sunburn – after treatment that goes away in a few hours or a day. In extremely rare cases people with darker skin color may experience some slight, temporary pigment changes. These will disappear on their own after a few days or weeks.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Absolutely not!
Because the frequency of light that is emitted by the laser is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicles – but not absorbed by the skin – the skin remains largely unaffected.
With our FDA approved, state-of-the-art lasers, there is no pain or even discomfort – and not even any need for numbing creams.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Yes. Results and number of treatments needed will vary depending upon your skin and hair type. But clients typically achieve permanent hair reduction of more than 90%. If a few hairs do grow back they will be much softer and lighter in color
