Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis
In this article we explain the differences between the laser hair removal options and electrolysis. We discuss the cost, the benefits, and the process of each type of hair removal, so you can decide which treatment is right for you.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis: Pain
Lasers are less painful than electrolysis. The pulsed light delivered by the laser has been described as feeling like a rubber band snapping the skin. Taking a couple Advil or Ibuprofen an hour before is usually enough to offset the minor pain.
On the other hand, Electrolysis has been called a stinging needle-poke sensation.
Additionally, with electrolysis each hair follicle has to be individually “needled” one-by-one, while lasers treat several hair shafts at a time. So the greater pain from electrolysis may feel like 20 needle pricks to every one laser hair removal snap.
As a result, laser treatments are far more comfortable than electrolysis.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis: Length & Number of Treatments
Laser hair removal only takes about 20 to 30 minutes per treatment, depending on the size of the area treated. Because the hairs grow at different intervals, five to eight treatments may be needed for complete hair removal.
Electrolysis treatments only takes about 10 to 20 minutes – but it could take up to a full year of weekly treatments to get rid of all the unwanted hair – one follicle at a time.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis: Cost
Our laser treatments are very affordable – starting at $45 for small areas and up to $95 for large areas. For just a little more than the cost of waxing, laser treatments offer a more permanent hair removal solution.
In the Detroit area, electrolysis runs from about $25 to $75 per treatment. But by the time you multiply that by months or a year of treatments, you could be spending more than $2,500.
So laser hair removal ends up being far less expensive than electrolysis.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis: Results
Laser arm hair removal uses special frequencies of light energy to penetrate the hair shaft. The pigment in the hair root absorbs light, and the resulting heat actually kills the hair root. After laser hair removal, the hair falls out within 10-14 days.
While laser treatments don’t kill the follicle itself, it is difficult or impossible for another hair to grow in its place. So laser hair removal is nearly permanent.
Electrolysis, on the other hand, does kill the hair follicle itself – making it a guaranteed permanent solution.
