Comparing Laser Hair Removal to Electrolysis
For decades painful and painstaking electrolysis was the only way to permanently reduce unwanted hair on the face and body. But advancements in laser technologies now make hair removal faster and more comfortable than ever.
AMAE Med Spa in the West Bloomfield area offers the most advanced and effective form of laser hair removal, which is “IPL” or “Advanced Pulsed Light”.
In this article we explain the differences between IPL laser hair removal and electrolysis. We discuss the cost, the benefits, and the process of each type of hair removal, so you can decide which treatment is right for you! But we think you will agree that IPL laser treatments offers many benefits that make it the hair removal treatment of choice for our West Bloomfield area patients.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis: Pain
Lasers are typically significantly less painful than electrolysis. The pulsed light delivered by the laser has been described as feeling like a rubber band snapping the skin. Taking a couple Advil or Ibuprofen an hour before is usually enough to offset the minor pain – and anesthetic is rarely needed.
On the other hand, electrolysis has been described as a stinging needle-poke sensation.
Additionally, with electrolysis each hair follicle has to be individually “needled” one-by-one, while lasers treat several hair shafts at a time. So the greater pain from electrolysis may feel like 20 needle pricks to every one laser hair removal snap.
As a result, laser hair removal treatments are far more comfortable than electrolysis.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis: Length & Number of Treatments
Laser hair removal only takes about 20 to 30 minutes per treatment, depending on the size of the area treated. The intense pulsed light actually targets multiple hair follicles in each pass – so much more hair can be treated during a single laser hair removal session than a single electrolysis procedure. Because the hairs grow at different intervals, five to eight IPL laser hair removal treatments may be needed for complete hair removal.
Electrolysis treatments also only take about 20 to 30 minutes – but it could take up to a full year of weekly treatments to get rid of all the unwanted hair – because the process involves removing one single hair follicle at a time. This is an extremely tedious and time consuming process.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis: Cost
IPL laser hair removal treatments are very affordable – depending on whether small areas (like a moustache or eyebrows) or large areas like the legs are being covered. For just a little more than the cost of waxing, laser treatments offer a more permanent hair removal solution.
However, with electrolysis – by the time you multiply the cost by several months or a full year of treatments – you will typically be spending considerably more for electrolysis than for IPL laser hair removal.
So laser hair removal generally ends up being far less expensive than electrolysis.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis: Results
Laser hair removal uses special frequencies of light energy to penetrate the hair shaft. The pigment in the hair root absorbs light, and the resulting heat actually kills the hair root. After laser hair removal, the hair falls out within 10-14 days.
While laser treatments don’t kill the follicle itself, it is difficult or impossible for another hair to grow in its place. So laser hair removal is nearly permanent. Electrolysis, on the other hand, does kill the hair follicle itself – making it a guaranteed permanent solution.
