Dermaplaning for Smooth, Radiant Skin
Dermaplaning is a simple and safe procedure that offers deep facial exfoliation – while also temporarily removing fine “villus hair”, commonly referred to as “peach fuzz.”
A sharp tool – somwhat like a scalpel – is used to scrape off the top layer of the skin. While the blade is quite sharp, the treatment is pain-free and there is virtually no downtime. Besides exfoliating the skin and removing hair, dermaplaning also has anti-aging benefits.
Dermaplaning leaves facial skin radiant, smooth and silky feeling. And our dermaplaning clients report that foundation, highlighter, blush, and bronzer apply and blend better than ever before after dermaplaning.
How Dermaplanning Works
Scraping the skin creates microscopic “wounds” in the skin. The body reacts to these tiny wounds by activating healing mechanisms that replenish and regenerate the skin – including growth factors that stimulate collagen production. And collagen production improves skin quality and tone, making it more “plumped” and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
Additionally, scraping off the epidermis allows medical grade skin care products that we use in our Birmingham Med Spa to penetrate the skin better and deeper.
Benefits of Dermaplaning
- Safe for all skin types
- Allows deeper skin care product penetration
- Chemical-free
- Removes “peach fuzz”
- No downtime
Dermaplaning is safe for all skin types, and it promotes better product penetration. It is also a safe alternative for pregnant or nursing women who want a deep exfoliation, but cannot use chemical peeling agents on their skin.
In addition to providing a deep exfoliation, Dermaplaning is also a great choice for patients who have excess villus hair, as this hair can be bothersome and often causes a buildup of dirt and oils in and around follicles.
There is no downtime with dermaplaning and it can be done as often as every two to four weeks.
Dermaplaning Compared to Other Facial Treatments
Dermaplaning is deeper than microdermabrasion. While microdermabrasion only takes off the surface cells of skin [stratum corneum], dermaplaning takes off most of the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of your skin.
Additionally, microdermabrasion doesn’t remove any facial hair, while dermaplanning gets rid of annoying “peach fuzz” – without painful plucking or harsh chemicals.
Note that while dermaplaning gets rid of fine lines, wrinkles and peach fuzz, it is not effective on acne scars.
