IPL Photofacial FAQs (Part 2)
Patients across Metro Detroit come to Troy, MI area AMAE Med Spa for our incredible IPL Photofacials. This revolutionary, non-invasive skin-rejuvenating technique provides patients with clear, smooth skin with no downtime.
In this two-part article, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ali answers some more of his patient’s most frequently asked questions about IPL Photofacials. . . .CLICK HERE for PART 1 of IPL Photofacial FAQs
What is the IPL Photofacial treatment like?
The IPL Photofacial procedure begins by applying the surface of the treatment area’s skin with a protective, cooling ultrasound gel. Following this, the settings of the IPL Photofacial device will be adjusted to match the patient’s skin color and targeted conditions. To get a feel for how the skin reacts, a spot test will usually be performed in a less-visible area, such as the jawline.
Next, the technician performing the IPL Photofacial will guide the device’s handpiece over the treatment area, directing the light to the redness, pigmentation, scarring, etc. Depending on the size of the treatment area, a typical IPL Photofacial procedure only takes between 20 to 45 minutes to complete.
Does IPL Photofacial hurt?
No. While the sensation of an IPL Photofacial has been described by some as feeling similar to the snap of a rubber band against the skin, our Troy, MI area patients tend to agree that the sensation is not at all painful, being little more than a minor, tolerable discomfort significantly less painful than undergoing something like waxing. For this reason, IPL Photofacial patients do not require anesthetic.
Some patients also report the “zapping” feeling of an IPL Photofacial to startle them somewhat, with some comparing it to the shock one feels from walking on carpet. This is said to be especially true when treating the area surrounding the mouth and nose. But with all that in mind, each zap of an IPL Photofacial covers an area of 1/3” by 1.6”, a far greater surface area than can be treated with a laser. This allows for a rapid procedure that, when compared to comparable treatments, is relatively free from discomfort.
What’s the difference between an IPL and a laser facial?
The IPL Photofacial is not performed using a laser, but instead an intense light source. Laser skin treatments are much more invasive and are set to a narrower, specific wavelength. The IPL Photofacial, on the other hand, is performed using a much less-invasive pulse of broad-spectrum high intensity light.
Since IPL operates on a wider range of wavelengths, one IPL machine can treat more than one condition – such as etc. – while a laser usually only treats one specific condition. Many skin conditions, including pigmentation, age spots, sun damage, redness, enlarge pores, spider veins, broken blood vessels, scarring, skin pitting and fine lines, can all be addressed with one single IPL Photofacial treatment.
Also, in addition to being less expensive than laser treatments, IPL is also safer and gentler than laser. This means IPL Photofacials don’t require the downtime that laser treatments cause.
Is there any downtime after an IPL Photofacial?
There is no downtime after an IPL Photofacial. This stands in contrast with most laser skin rejuvenating treatments, which tend to cause enough redness, blistering, and peeling to warrant several days of recovery. The worst IPL Photofacial patients can expect to experience is the appearance of a minor sunburn. At the Troy, MI area’s AMAE Med Spa, we routinely treat patients who booked their IPL Photofacial for their lunch break, only to return to work immediately after.
