Juvéderm Facial Fillers: What to Expect
Amazing Juvéderm facial fillers can make wrinkles disappear, plump-up hollow or sunken facial contours, create luscious full lips, and fill in facial folds and creases. And, newer Juvéderm formulations can last up to an astounding two years!
Birmingham, MI board certified plastic surgeon doctor Ali has performed thousands of Juvederm facial filler injections. In this article he explains what to expect before, during and after your Juvederm facial filler treatment.
Before Your Juvéderm Facial Filler Appointment
Birmingham cosmetic surgeon Doctor Ali recommends that you avoid any medications that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin, Ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), for at least a week prior to receiving facial fillers. If you have taken blood thinners within the past year, please advise Doctor Ali, as well. Avoiding these medications will reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
However, always consult with your primary physician before discontinuing any medication!
Of course smoking is never good for you. But smoking can also slow the body’s ability to heal. Not smoking before and after your procedure will help reduce any swelling or inflammation from the procedure more rapidly.
If you are getting Juvéderm filler in your lips, please let our staff know in advance if you have herpes simplex virus (“cold sores”). We recommend that you call your physician for treatment as if you were experiencing an outbreak. While Juvéderm does not cause outbreaks, it can trigger a non-active outbreak.
If you are allergic to Lidocaine, have a history of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), or are pregnant, nursing or may become pregnant, Juvéderm is not right for you at this time.
Choosing Your Juvéderm Facial Filler
The Juvéderm family of facial fillers encompases several different formulas – that vary in thickness and longevity. The formula of Juvéderm facial filler that is right for your aesthetic needs will depend upon a number of factors. Dr. Ali will help you choose the Juvéderm formula that is right for you, depending on:
- the location the treatment (lips, cheeks, etc.)
- the type of lines or wrinkles (nasolabial folds, lip lines, crow’s feet)
- the amount of volume loss
- the depth of the wrinkle(s)
- the desired results (subtle, dramatic, etc.)
There are two main Juvéderm formulas typically used for the lips: Ultra XC to add volume; and, Volbella XC to for lip lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
Juvéderm Vollure is used to get rid of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, and Juvéderm Voluma can fill and plump flattened cheeks and sagging skin. Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC is ideal for treating deeper wrinkles, lines, and naso-labial folds. Dr. Ali will help you choose the facial filler that is best for your needs.
During Your Juvéderm Facial Filler Appointment
The Juvéderm Facial Filler injection procedure only takes approximately 15-30 minutes. However, the doctor or nurse will allow time to go over your health history, discuss your appearance goals and conduct a facial analysis. So you should allow a good hour for your Juvéderm Facial Filler appointment.
Doctor Ali may apply topical numbing cream and/or ice, to minimize any discomfort. He will discuss your pain management options with your thoroughly before he administers your facial fillers.
Juvéderm® facial filler formulas that include “XC” also contain pain-reducing lidocaine, to further minimize any pain or discomfort during the injection.
After Your Juvéderm Facial Filler Appointment
Everyone heals differently. Some patients may experience pain, tenderness, temporary redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, and bumps at the injection sites. These side effects are usually mild and clear up on their own in 5 to 7 days or less.
If you experience any swelling at the injection site, you can apply an ice pack for a brief period. To reduce bruising, the use of topical arnica, bromelain, or high-doses of Vitamin K may be helpful.
For at least 24 hours after a facial filler treatment, patients should avoid strenuous exercise, alcoholic beverages, and, exposure to sun or heat.
