First Time “Botox-ers” Frequently Asked Questions
Botox is the world’s most popular cosmetic treatment for a number of very good reasons. It works immediately, delivers dramatic results, lasts for months, and is extremely safe when administered by a medical professional.
Nonetheless, doing anything for the first time can cause both excitement and anxiety. Remember your first kiss? First job? The first time you drove a car?
But knowing what to expect can help ensure you have a great experience. So, in this article, the Botox experts at AMAE Med Spa in the Detroit area answer our first-time Botox patients’ most “Frequently Asked Questions”.
Is Botox Safe?
Botox is one of the safest and most well studied cosmetic treatments available today. We have performed Botox treatments on thousands of patients in the Detroit area with spectacular and safe results. Botox® has been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) since 2002 – almost 20 years!
As with any medication or medical treatment there can occasionally be some side effects. But in clinical studies only an extremely small percentage of patients had any complications from Botox. Less than 1% experienced eyelid swelling when being treated with Botox for crow’s feet. And approximately only 3% saw some eyelid drooping after forehead injection with Botox.
Because these side effects are possible – although extremely rare – it is important to have your Botox administered by a licensed, certified and experienced injector like renowned Troy area plastic surgeon Dr. Ali, or one of our skilled nurse injectors.
Does Botox Hurt?
It’s funny how “shots” were such a big deal when we were kids – while we hardly notice injections as an adult. Anyone who had their COVID vaccine will probably tell you that they barely felt it.
Because Botox is also injected with a needle, you might feel a slight sting. Many of our Troy, MI patients report that being injected with Botox feels like a pinch.
If you are concerned about your comfort during your first Botox treatment – or if you are particularly averse to needles – ask Dr. Ali about applying ice or a topical numb cream to the treatment area beforehand.
What Age is Best for My First Botox treatment?
Every patient is very different. The age at which you should start Botox will depend on two things: the condition of your skin and what results you are looking for.
Patients who are using Botox to prevent wrinkles should typically start Botox in their mid thirties – when they start to notice that expression lines in the face don’t immediately disappear but linger a bit.
Patients using Botox to relax existing visible wrinkles often start in their late thirties or early forties. That is about the age that most people start to develop “Type 3” wrinkles that don’t disappear after you stop making a facial expression.
However, patients seeking alternative Botox benefits – such as a “lip flip” to treat a gummy smile, or superficial injections to reduce pores and create “glass skin”, and/or a masseter treatments for TMJ or to slim the face – can start Botox anytime over the age of 21.
