Botox May Have Long-Lasting Anti-Aging Effects
While most people elect to use cosmetic Botox for softening and smoothing of existing wrinkles caused by smiling, frowning, squinting, etc., recent studies have suggested that Botox may actually prevent some wrinkles from forming altogether. The Journal of American Medicine (JAMA) Facial Plastic Surgery and a Canadian study shows that Botox, during its active phases, essentially increases the elasticity of skin for three to four months.
By paralyzing the muscles from movement and increasing the skin’s elasticity, it may be possible that Botox is keeping the skin from being able to wrinkle. As normal facial muscles move and contract, the natural movement of skin would squeeze together in these places, forming lines over time. Because Botox prevents these muscle movements, theoretically, it prevents wrinkles from forming as well.
Botox has a reputation of being used by vain personalities and celebrities to hang onto a more youthful appearance. But these new studies may show that results are not as short-lived or superficial as once thought. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that over 6.6 million Americans underwent wrinkle-reduction procedures with Botox or similar drugs last year, for a temporary effect of smoothing lines and wrinkles. It may be that people who use Botox will get the added benefit of preventing deep lines from becoming more severe and preventing new lines from forming.
Botox May Prevent Wrinkles from Forming
Researchers performed a study on 43 women who were first-time users of Botox. The study used a device that measures the skin’s elasticity by sucking in the skin and determining the percentage of bounce back to its original position. Results showed that at age 70, skin rebounded 30% slower than at age 20. The study measured a 30% increase in elasticity when Botox is at its peak performance and strength. Botox delivers the most powerful effects at two months, then begins to diminish and loses its effect at month four.
When skin loses elasticity, wrinkles are easier to form, making our faces look older. Clients of Botox are most often looking for a way to smooth wrinkles and return to a more youthful look. The study shows that while increasing elasticity of skin for up to 4 months, Botox may also be slowing and preventing wrinkles from getting deeper and stopping other wrinkles from forming at all.
Botox is not only affecting the muscles, but the skin as well. Clients beginning Botox injections in their twenties, thirties and forties can see an added benefit of preventing wrinkles from forming and stopping deep wrinkles from becoming deeper. This Botox benefit of wrinkle prevention has attracted younger clients and may help develop a larger market of clients for cosmetic Botox injections.
By paralyzing and freezing facial muscles, wrinkles are prevented from forming. Beginning Botox at an earlier age can stop lines and wrinkles from forming on the skin. Weakening facial muscles in the early years stops new wrinkles, prevents deep wrinkles from becoming deeper , and Botox will be less necessary in the later years.
