Botox Injections for Fuller Lips & Better Smiles

In addition to treating wrinkles, Botox is also sometimes used to make lips appear fuller and correct smiles. The type of lip correction desired determines the specific location where Botox is injected. Botox remains active and relaxes muscles in the lips for up to three months.

Botox injected into specific sites on the lips can weaken muscles to smooth out upper and lower lip areas, elevate corners of the mouth, and remove “marionette” lines. These are the lines that extend downward from corners of mouth. Botox can also elevate the corners of the mouth. Injections can fix a “gummy” smile to show less gums.

One specific fix is referred to as the Botox “lip flip,” which relaxes muscles around the lips, causing them to curl, making them look larger.

The Botox “Lip Flip”

Although Botox is normally used for smoothing wrinkles in the upper facial region, it can provide benefits in the lip area as well. The Botox “lip flip” is a newer procedure used to correct smiles and make lips appear larger.

The lip flip relaxes the “orbicularis oris,” the muscles around the mouth. Relaxing these muscles causes the lip to roll outward and curl upward. This makes the lip look larger, lengthening the upper lip, without adding volume. This treatment allows the muscles to retain their function.

Performing the lip flip effectively takes experience to get the best results and allow the mouth to move properly. Injecting the correct muscles and with the right amount of Botox for each effect is complicated, but takes less than a minute to do. Botox for a “Gummy” Smile

A “gummy” smile is one that shows the gums above the teeth and may also show little to no upper lip. Botox can adjust the smile by placing injections in the “Cupid’s bow” of the lip. This is the muscle used to pucker lips, called the orbicularis oris.

When this muscle is relaxed,  it causes the upper lip to curl slightly, making lips appear larger and the lips cover more of the gums.
