6 Ways to Treat Skin Damage from Smoking
Unfortunately, many people started smoking when they were young and unaware or unconcerned with long term damage to their body and skin caused by tobacco usage. Smoking, or being around secondhand smoke can have severe consequences on the skin. Over 4,000 chemicals are present in tobacco smoke and many destroy the body’s collagen and elastin fibers, which cause the skin to lose elasticity and structure, resulting in lines, wrinkles, and sagging.
If you now regret the lines, wrinkles and other skin damage caused by smoking, AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI offers several state-of-the-art skincare treatments to improve skin and reverse some of the effects of smoking.
There are a variety of skin treatments that can help “reverse” the signs of smoking. Treatments that focus on regenerating the skin’s collagen and elastin are most beneficial, these include chemical peels, laser resurfacing (including IPL, Fraxel, and CO2RE ), as well as microneedling, radiofrequency, and the regenerative power of PRP and exosomes.
#1. Ellipse IPL Laser for Treating Smoking Skin Damage
The IPL Photofacial gets its name from its use of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to perform skin rejuvenation and treat multiple skin conditions derived from smoking. Unlike other laser skin rejuvenation treatments, the IPL Photofacial is as a result capable of penetrating the skin without subjecting it to severe damage.
The IPL Photofacial carefully induces the body’s natural wound healing mechanism – which triggers the body’s production of collagen and elastin fiber to repair fine lines and wrinkles and restore elasticity.
#2. Fraxel Lasers for Treating Smoking Skin Damage
Fraxel laser treatment also encourages the growth of elastin and collagen by creating microscopic wounds in the skin to stimulate renewal. The effects are painless and only a mild redness occurs, similar to a light sunburn, that can be covered by makeup for a day or so. Fraxel is completely safe and leaves no scars.
It is an excellent, non-invasive treatment to reduce fine lines and wrinkles caused by smoking.
#3. PRP for Treating Smoking Skin Damage
PRP can actually repair skin damage caused by smoking. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has concentrated platelets, rich in growth factors that help the skin produce elastin and collagen fibers to help repair the damage caused by smoking.
Blood is drawn from the patient’s arm and spun to separate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) way from other cells types. The liquid PRP is then administered back into the face via microneedling, where the PRP begins to rejuvenate cells and erase skin damage caused by smoking.
Our Birmingham, MI Med Spa offers a “fractional” PRP treatment to help improve skin damage caused by smoking, using either the SkinStylus microneedling process or Morpheus8 radiofrequency microneedling. These are the best and most advanced microneedling systems and devices available.
#4. Chemical Peels for Treating Smoking Skin Damage
Our Birmingham, MI medical skin care professionals may also recommend an Obagi Blue Chemical Peel to treat skin damage from smoking. Unlike many other alpha-hydroxy peels, the Obagi Blue Chemical Peel is applied in layers to allow for precise control of the strength and depth of treatment.
The number of peel layers will be chosen by our medical professionals based on each patient’s prescribed treatment for the type and depth of their smoking skin damage.
#5. Dermal Fillers for Treating Skin Damage from Smoking
In addition to peels and other forms of treatment, dermal fillers can help immediately “fill in” fine lines and wrinkles caused by smoking. So-called “smokers lines” – the vertical lines above and below the lips – can add years to a person’s appearance. But several advanced dermal filler formulas – including Juvéderm Volbella and Restylane Silk – are specially formulated to effectively target and banish smokers lines.
#6. CO2RE Laser for Treating Skin Damage from Smoking
Our newest and most advanced treatment for smokers lines is the Candela CO2RE fractional laser. This state-of-the-art skin resurfacing treatment dramatically reduces wrinkles by removing the aged top layer of skin tissue, while simultaneously stimulating cell regeneration with a fractional laser.
In addition to smoothing out lines and wrinkles, the CO2RE laser can reduce or remove spots & pigmentation. CO2RE laser skin resurfacing and wrinkle reduction is a safe, affordable, and effective way to treat skin damage from smoking and take years off one’s appearance – without the downtime of surgery. And, for most patients, only one laser skin resurfacing treatment is needed for remarkable anti-aging results that can last several years!
