How does Fraxel laser skin treatment work?
During the Fraxel laser skin treatment, thousands of microscopic laser columns (each as small as one-tenth of a hair follicle in diameter) penetrate the skin one section at a time, without affecting the tissue in the surrounding area. This process is called “fractional photothermolysis” – which is where the name “Fraxel” comes from.
These microscopic columns created by the laser are perceived as “wounds” by the body – which activates the skin’s own natural repair and rejuvenation processes. This stimulates new production of the protein building blocks collagen and elastin – replacing damaged tissue with smoother, healthier, stronger, tighter and younger looking skin.
As the laser columns only treat the tissue one fraction at a time, no damage occurs to the surrounding tissue in the process. This results in a tremendously fast healing process. In other words, through the Fraxel laser skin treatment, new, healthy skin cells are grown from the inside out.
How is Fraxel laser different than other lasers?
In the past, there have only been two types of laser skin treatment available on the market: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative treatments vaporize unwanted tissue with high temperatures, and while they can be effective, they also carry with them many negative side effects and lengthy periods of recovery.
Non-ablative treatments like Fraxel, on the other hand, have fewer side effects and shorter recovery times, but in order to produce even the most modest of results often require numerous sessions of treatment.
With Fraxel laser skin treatment, patients are afforded the effectiveness of ablative treatments with the speedy recovery of non-ablative laser skin treatments, making it the perfect choice for anyone considering laser skin treatment.
Is Fraxel laser better than microdermabrasion or peels?
Microdermabrasion and chemical peels only target the superficial, top layer of the facial skin. Fraxel laser skin treatment, on the other hand, stimulates the growth of new, healthy cells of skin below the dermis, resulting in the patient’s face looking more smooth, more plump, and more supple than ever.
Are there different types of Fraxel laser treatments?
There are actually several Fraxel laser devices, each designed for specific types of treatments. Some of the most common Fraxel laser devices include Fraxel Dual, Fraxel Restore, and Fraxel Repair.
Fraxel Dual is used for treating various skin conditions, including age spots, sun damage, and acne scars, while also promoting collagen production. Fraxel Restore is designed for improving the overall appearance of skin, such as reducing fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin texture and tone, and diminishing the appearance of age spots. Finally, Fraxel Repair is a more intensive laser treatment that is used for more severe skin damage, such as deeper wrinkles, scarring, and sun damage. It uses a combination of carbon dioxide and erbium laser to remove damaged skin cells and stimulate collagen production.
Does Fraxel laser skin treatment hurt?
During the treatment, patients typically describe a sensation of heat, but no pain is reported. Prior to the treatment, discomfort is minimized by applying a topical anesthetic to the treatment area. Additionally, the treatment area is blown with cold air during the treatment to minimize heat.
While other laser treatments are known for their sharp “snapping” or “zapping” sensation, Fraxel laser skin treatment provides a more comfortable sensation of deep heat.
Some patients walk away from their Fraxel laser skin treatment experiencing a sensation similar to a mild sunburn, but this generally fades away after a period of one-to-three hours.
