How Radiofrequency Microneedling is Different from Traditional Microneedling
Radiofrequency microneedling is a revolutionary skincare treatment which has proven to be an effective way of treating everything from fine lines and wrinkles, to lose skin, stretch marks, cellulite and unwanted pigment variations.
Patients of AMAE Med Spa in the Troy, MI area often have many questions about the differences between microneedling and radiofrequency (RF) microneedling. This article contains everything you need to know about the advantages of radiofrequency microneedling, and the ways in which it differs from standard microneedling treatments.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is not a new concept. It has its origins in acupuncture, which originated in China sometime around 100 BC! Microneedling was first introduced in 1995. The procedure originally utilized hypodermic needles to help reduce the appearance of scaring and wrinkles. Through the years, the procedure has evolved considerably. Microneedling devices today use microscopic needles which pierce through the skin, stimulating the body to produce collagen and elastin.
Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling takes this treatment even further by delivering a pulse of radiofrequency energy when the needle is inserted, leading to improved skin texture, elasticity, tightness, and smoothness.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling devices penetrate deep into the lowest layer of the skin, called the dermis. This is done with several microscopic needles which penetrate the top two layers of skin, the epidermis and the hypodermis, into the lower dermal layer. The result is something called a “micro-injury”. This stimulates the body to begin the process of healing, which will in turn facilitate the natural production of elastin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid.
Collagen is a protein which can be found throughout the body. 75% of the dermal skin layer is comprised of collagen. One of the most noteworthy traits of collagen protein is that it keeps the skin plump and tight.
Roughly 2% of the dermal skin layer consists of elastin proteins. While that may not sound like a lot, elastin is very important because it does just what its name implies: it gives skin its natural elasticity and “snap back”. As the body ages, the production of elastin slows. This can lead to rough skin texture, sagging lose skin, and wrinkles.
And finally, there’s hyaluronic acid. Holding as much as a thousand times its weight in water, hyaluronic acid helps bind water molecules to collagen proteins, keeping the skin hydrated. Without it, the skin loses its healthy plumpness and becomes much less firm.
Because all of these are decreased as a person’s age increases, stimulating their production can do wonders in rejuvenating a more youthful appearance.
Traditional microneedling can be used to treat various conditions. A microneedling pen can be used to fine lines and wrinkles and other skin defects virtually anywhere on the body. During an initial consultation, a variety to treatment options, including microneedling will be discussed to determine which is best for a patient’s individual needs. Microneedling is very affordable. And it also requires little to no downtime.
What are the Benefits of Radiofrequency Microneedling?
Radiofrequency microneedling can improve and intensify the benefits of microneedling by combining the tried and true benefits of microneedling with fractional radiofrequency. The addition of this pulse of thermal energy, delivered through the tips of the needles, further stimulates the body to begin the increasing the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. This speeds up the skin rejuvenation process and leads to plumper, tighter, smoother and more youthful skin.
Radiofrequency microneedling has been proven to diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks, and can even help to repair surgical scars and scaring left behind by acne. RF microneedling provides a much better result overall than that of traditional microneedling on its own. Similarly, radiofrequency microneedling requires very little downtime.
