Why At-Home Microneedling during Coronavirus Quarantine is a Bad Idea
Microneedling is a highly effective, minimally invasive treatment for fine lines, lax facial skin, hyperpigmentation (dark spots), and acne scars. During your microneedling treatment a medical aesthetician creates tiny pricks in the skin using micro-fine needles. These tiny “wounds” activate the body’s healing process, thereby stimulating collagen and elastin production.
While microneedling “can” be done at home, it is not as effective as having it performed by a trained and licensed aesthetician using clinical grade equipment. And, home microneedling is much more painful and much less safe than medically performed microneedling.
#1. Microneedling is Not Safe for Everyone
Microneedling treatments are great for most adults and many different skin types – but there are a few people for whom microneedling can cause mild to serious problems. This is one reason why you should schedule a consultation with a licensed medical aesthetician before starting microneedling, in order to to see if you’re a good candidate.
Underlying medical conditions, bleeding or scarring disorders, or medication you are taking (such as blood thinners) may mean that microneedling is just not safe for you personally. Microneedling can also cause flare-ups for people with eczema, rosacea, and active acne outbreaks.
So it is always best to wait and consult with a trained and licensed medical professional – rather than attempt to “do it yourself” and risk medical consequences.
Additionally, because microneedling requires piercing the skin, infection is always possible when performed at home and not in a sterile medical environment.
#2. Microneedling Needle Size Differences
Microneedling tools can range from .25mm all the way up to 3mm. Most “at home” dermarollers that are available online only contain very tiny needles that are 0.25 to .5mm.
Professional trained and licensed medical aestheticians typically use needles that are much longer – and penetrate the skin more deeply – in widths that ranges from 1 mm to 3 mm.
While shorter needles do still help increase skin product absorption, it is the deeper medical-grade microneedling that actually stimulates the skin to naturally produce collagen and elastin.
Even if you are able to purchase these longer microneedling tools, care must be taken not to cause skin damage or infection. A licensed aesthetician in a sterile Medical Spa environment has been trained on the proper usage of longer needles to achieve maximum results without damaging skin or causing infection.
#3. It is Possible to “overdo” Microneedling
Improper or too frequent microneedling can also lead to broken capillaries, as well as predispose skin to a plastic look.
A licensed aesthetician has been trained to identify the optimal amount and frequency of microneedling for best results.
Licensed medical aesthetician Our Aestheticians will put together a personalized microneedling plan based on your skin type and condition age to achieve maximum results without over-needling, skin damage, or infection.
#4. Microneedling is Painful without Anesthetic!
Because microneedling requires piercing the skin, it is painful when performed without a numbing cream or anesthetic. And, the deeper the needle the better the results – however the deeper the needle the more it hurts!
Waiting to have microneedling performed at a medical spa means you can experience maximum benefits without the pain of at-home microneedling.
