Tips for Getting Laser Hair Removal
When it comes to any procedure that affects your body, it is important to make informed choices in order to avoid complications and get the best results.
This is especially true when it comes something as advanced and potent as laser hair removal. It truly is as much of a medical procedure as it is a spa treatment.
Where to have Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Unlike waxing, which only removes the hair shaft – and only lasts a matter of weeks – laser hair removal lasts years because it kills the hair root and stops the hair follicle’s ability to grow hair. Since this is a permanent and powerful treatment it should be done by licensed medical and nursing professionals who use FDA approved equipment in a medical spa – and not a salon.
At our medical spa you will still be pampered in a luxurious spa room – but our conditions are clinically sterile, to ensure patient health and safety. Unlike most beauty salons, our immaculate medical spa environment and our licensed medical staff can prevent infections, burns and other complications that can result when unskilled people operate lasers.
Additionally, at our Birmingham Med Spa, every hair removal treatment is conducted in a private room, for complete discretion and privacy.
Preparing for Laser Hair Removal
Avoiding caffeine the day of your Laser Hair Removal is a good idea. Additionally, try to schedule your appointment when you are not having your period, and not feeling the effects of PMS. Menstruation actual makes the skin more sensitive.
Patients should avoid sun exposure – and/or wear sunscreen – on the areas to be treated for 3 weeks before the procedure. The reason for this is twofold. First, the laser works better on lighter skin. Secondly, even minor sunburn on the skin can increase the pain of laser treatment.
Avoid any skin irritants or peels such as retinol, glycolic acid or alpha & beta hydroxy acids for at least three days prior to treatment.
Finally, shave the area to be treated a day or two before the laser application. This way the laser will only burn the root of the hair below the skin – and there will be little or no hair above the skin to “singe.”
Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?
Relaxing during any medical treatment helps the body respond more positively with less discomfort. Our luxurious rooms, soft lighting, warm herbal teas and caring staff will put you in a relaxed and pampered state – so you are never feeling stressed during your laser hair removal treatment
Lasers hair removal is far less painful than waxing or electrolysis. The pulsed light delivered by the laser has been described as feeling like a rubber band snapping the skin. And since the laser treats several hair shafts art once, there are fewer “snaps.”
Taking a couple Advil or Ibuprofen a half hour to an hour before your laser hair removal treatment is usually enough to offset any minor pain. Some patients even swear by having a glass of wine to relax and “feel no pain” during the hair removal. (Just make sure you have a driver or an Uber arranged!)
After the nurse or laser technician is finished treating an area, placing an ice pack on it will numb any pain. At the conclusion of the session, a special soothing lotion containing aloe lotion will also be gently rubbed on the area.
