What to Expect During a PRP Facial

The media is all abuzz with the stunning anti-aging benefits of the new so-called “vampire” PRP facials.

The PRP Facial Procedure

Healthy young skin has high levels of collagen and elastin. As skin ages, it produces less of these vital elements that counter facial sagging and fine lines. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains healing properties to stimulate production of collagen and elastin and improves overall facial tone.

PRP is collected by drawing a small about of blood from the arm, about 10cc’s. The blood is then separated using a centrifuge machine so the platelets can be isolated from other blood components. The concentrated platelets contain growth factors that repair tissue at up to 8 times that of normal blood.

Once collected, the PRP is injected back into the face using either a syringe, a microneedling process, or a combination of both. This infuses the platelets and the growth factors deep into the skin. Typically, the application is intensified around facial areas that show more pronounced aging, followed by a lighter full-face application.

The PHP growth factors then stimulate collagen and elastin production and promote repair and restoration of the skin.

PRP Facial Recovery & Results

While the effects of the PRP Facial may take several weeks to fully appear, there is almost no recovery time and patients can return to their day-to-day activities immediately following the procedure. If a slight redness or swelling of the skin occurs post-procedure it will diminish in 2 to 3 days or less. Sunscreen and makeup may be applied after 24-hours.

Over the next several weeks, the platelets’ growth factors will continue to stimulate production of collagen and elastin deep within the layers of the skin’s cells. Patients will begin to see visibly thicker and firmer skin, softening of facial lines, more tight facial tone and a reduction in blemishes, dark spots or scarring. More than one PRP Facial session may be recommended depending upon the condition of the skin and the extent of the wrinkles, lines and sun damage.
