The Science Behind the Platelet Rich Plasma PRP Facial
The exciting new Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) facial is a scientific procedure that counters the natural effects of aging and restores a more youthful appearance. PRP Facials are now available our West Bloomfield area Med Spa.
The PRP facial was introduced to the mainstream public just a few years ago when reality stars like Kim Kardashian sensationalized this so-called “Vampire Facial” ® and had the procedure performed on TV or Instagram. While these celebrities’ gorgeous skin demonstrates the benefits of these plasma facials – a lot of buzz surrounded the “shocking” social media photos of the somewhat bloody procedure.
However, the procedure (and the science behind it) is very safe and not nearly so dramatic. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is simply derived from a quick blood draw from the patient’s arm. The patients’ blood is then spun to separate the platelets from other cell types. The concentrated platelets – rich in growth factors – are then microneedled back into the face to help repair cells, just as they do in the body.
The PRP Facial Process
It takes very little blood to provide the platelet-rich-plasma for the PRP Facial procedure. Only 10cc of blood is drawn, usually from the arm. It’s then placed in a centrifuge and spun to separate the red and white blood elements away from the platelets.
The PRP Facial process involves infusing the platelets into the skin by microneedling, which helps the growth factor to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin.
In addition, the microneedling also helps improve skin texture and boosts collagen production. The PRP may also be injected directly via syringe into more serious problem areas such under the eyes and around the nose where smile lines typically appear.
The Science Behind PRP Facials
PRP Facials are among the safest types of facial treatments because they uses the patient’s own blood to create the serum. This means there is no risk of allergic reaction. The PRP delivers the body’s own natural healing elements which stimulates the recovery and regeneration of facial tissue.
The results of a PRP facial continue to improve over several months, including improved skin tone and texture, fewer wrinkles and a tighter, firmer face shape which can last up to 2 years.
Skin Issues PRP Facials Can Help
Everyone experiences the signs of aging, which makes the PRP facial right for so many people. Both men and women suffer from sagging skin, poor elasticity, fine lines and overall facial softening, all of which the PRP facial process can improve. What might be surprising is that the procedure is also effective to reduce acne, chicken pox or other facial scarring, and is perfectly safe for teens and young adults.
