What Kind of Wrinkles Can Botox Injections Fix?
Botox was the first product of its type to be approved to treat moderate to severe glabellar (forehead) lines in 2002. Botox is now used to fix different types of facial wrinkles and has been approved to be used in more treatment areas than any other brand of similar product. The results of Botox injections will depend upon both the type, severity and location of the wrinkle.
Areas of the Face Botox Works On
Botox is widely used to fix wrinkles in the upper facial region, focusing on the eyes, forehead and between the eyebrows. These are common areas for wrinkles to form. Botox injections in these areas allow for a temporary relaxing of the muscles to soften vertical forehead lines and wrinkles between the eyes (referred to as “elevens” or “frown lines”). Botox cosmetic is the only treatment approved by the FDA for moderate-to-severe canthal lines (crow’s feet), glabellar lines (elevens), or forehead lines.
The area where the upper and lower eyelids meet is called the canthus. These canthal lines or wrinkles are frequently referred to as crow’s feet. The bags formed below the eyes, which create tired looking eyes, are created by the inner or medial canthal lines.
Elevens or frown lines are located in between the eyebrows and extend upward about a centimeter into the forehead area. These are the glabellar lines. As early as in the mid 20s, these forehead lines are usually the first to form and can make a person look like they are frowning and appear older.
While Botox is primarily used in the upper regions of the face, it can also be an effective solution to relax the lips to cover more of the gums and give the appearance of larger lips. An experienced and skilled doctor can inject Botox into the lip muscles to cause lips to curl and relax muscles, allowing more of the gums to be covered when smiling.
Types of Wrinkles Botox Works On
The lines created from facial muscle movements are called dynamic wrinkles. Botox blocks the facial muscles from moving, which softens and relaxes the dynamic wrinkles that are created from facial muscle movements. Crow’s feet, frown lines, and other creases caused by muscle movements like smiling are are dynamic wrinkles. Botio is ideal for treating any dynamic facial lines.
Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are not impacted greatly by Botox treatments. Static wrinkles are lines that are visible on the face even when the face is at rest. These lines are visible all the time and have formed with age, sun damage and other factors. Because Botox works by relaxing muscles, it does not help static wrinkles which aren’t caused by muscle movement.
However, when Botox is used over a long period of time, it can actually help stop both dynamic and shallow static wrinkle from becoming deeper.
While Botox gives the best results for dynamic wrinkles, we also offer a wide variety of other treatments at our Birmingham, MI Med Spa for static wrinkles. Injectable facial fillers, as well as advanced facial peels and laser treatments, work exceptionally well on static wrinkles. These procedures can also be used in conjunction with Botox for a full complement of wrinkle fighting treatments.
