The Importance of Sunscreen & The Best Way to Use It!
When it comes to safeguarding your skin from the damaging effects of the sun, sunscreen plays a vital role. While many people associate sunscreen with sunny beach days, its importance extends far beyond that. Whether you’re engaging in summer activities, spending time outdoors on a cloudy day, or even staying indoors but exposed to natural light, wearing sunscreen is crucial in maintaining healthy skin and preventing sun damage.
In this article the skincare experts at AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI discuss the importance of sunscreen and provide essential tips for using it effectively. We also provide information on our three favorite medical-grade sunscreen products.
Why Sunscreen is Essential
The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, consisting of UVA and UVB rays. Prolonged exposure to these rays is the primary cause of premature aging, sunburn, and unwanted pigmentation (age spots and sun spots). Sunscreen forms a protective barrier on the skin, reducing the penetration of these harmful rays. Sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) helps prevent skin damage, sunburn, and unwanted pigmentation by blocking the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.
But sun damage is much more than a cosmetic problem. Skin cancer, cause by sun exposure, is one of the most common types of cancer.
Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma tend to grow slowly and are more likely to be localized, making them highly treatable with a low risk of spreading to other parts of the body. However, if left untreated or undiagnosed for an extended period, these types of skin cancer can cause local tissue damage and disfigurement.
However, Melanoma, although less common, is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. It has the potential to metastasize or spread to other organs and tissues in the body. In the United States, it is estimated that there are more than 200,000 new cases of melanoma every year, according to the American Cancer Society.
Regularly using sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection shields the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of developing skin cancer.
How to Use Sunscreen Effectively
Opt for a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, meaning it guards against both UVA and UVB rays. And, always choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. SPF indicates the level of protection against UVB rays. Higher SPF values provide more extended protection.
Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of the skin, including the face, neck, arms, and legs. Don’t forget easily overlooked areas like the ears, back of the neck, and tops of the feet. Pigmentation and skin cancer can develop in these unsuspected areas. And remember to use a lip balm with SPF to protect your lips, and wear sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from harmful rays.
Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if you’re swimming, sweating, or towel-drying. Even water-resistant sunscreens lose their effectiveness over time. And remember, sunscreen should be a part of your daily routine, regardless of the weather. UV rays can still reach your skin on cloudy days, and certain types of clouds may even enhance UV exposure.
If you spend time near windows at home or work – or have ample exposure to natural light indoors – wear sunscreen indoors, too. Sunscreen can protect your skin from the UV rays that can penetrate through glass.
When possible, seek shade if you are outdoors, especially during the sun’s peak hours between 10 am and 4 pm. Even when in the shade, continue to use sunscreen, as UV rays can still reach your skin indirectly.
