Remove Acne Scars with Radiofrequency Microneedling
When most people think of acne scars, they probably think of them as a byproduct of our teenage years. But acne is no respecter of age, and adults at every stage can be affected by acne breakouts. With the COVID-19 pandemic imposing regular mask wearing, men and women are experiencing facial acne at a higher rate than ever. Mask bred acne has become so prevalent, it has even landed its very own name: “maskne”!
No matter what the root cause, or the age of the individual, the acne itself will eventually subside. But unfortunately, it can leave behind unattractive and embarrassing scars, which can be stress-inducing all by themselves.
But there is good news! A state-of-the-art skin remodeling and contouring treatment has recently been added at AMAE Med Spa in Birmingham, MI. The Morpheus8 is a Radiofrequency Microneedling treatment which delivers deep radiofrequency thermal energy to simultaneously melt fat and stimulate natural dermal rejuvenation. Morpheus8 is a natural, effective, minimally invasive, treatment for acne scarring that is nothing short of revolutionary.
How Acne Scars are Caused
When hair follicles in the skin become obstructed with dirt, dead skin cells, or oils such as sebum (a natural secretion of the sebaceous glands) bacteria can get trapped within the clogged pores where it will begin growing beneath the skin’s surface. This growth leads to inflammation, and acne breakouts quickly arise. Sooner or later these pimples will break through the surface and “pop” which can cause damage to the skin resulting in permanent scarring.
The human body is equipped with a natural system for healing wounds. Typically, skin tissue will be smooth and flexible due to the presence of collagen fibers. When the skin is unscathed, these fibers are arranged in a random formation. However, when scar tissue is formed after the skin has been broken, these fibers will become “cross-linked”, a pattern of reorganization the body uses to strengthen and better-protect the area which has been afflicted. The result is thick, unsightly scar tissue.
Various Forms of Acne Scars
The size of acne scars and their type is dependent upon a number of variables, including how deep the bacteria within pimple had grown. At their onset, acne scars will have a pink or red color. With time, they will typically become colorless; though, occasionally they may develop a slightly brown hue.
Pitted acne scars, more commonly referred to as either “icepick scars” or “box scars”, are indentions into the dermal surface, as opposed to raised scar tissue.
Another prevalent type of scarring is the more shallow and wider “rolling” scars. This name is derived from their sloped edges, which gives them the appearance of a “valley”. These forms of acne scars will, unfortunately, become worse as the skin ages.
Using Radiofrequency Microneedling to Reduce Acne Scars
Those who have suffered with acne are already keenly aware of what clinical studies have proven: that living with acne scars can diminish confidence about their own appearance.
Until recently, lasers treatments were the only methods proven effective in permanently resurfacing acne scars. Many of these procedures were painful and required a healing process which could take multiple days. But now, the Morpheus8 Radiofrequency Microneedling has eliminated the need for lasers by harnessing the body’s natural wound-healing system. It in a safe and effective process that is both natural and cost-effective, significantly reduces downtime, and is performed in Birmingham, MI Med Spa.
The Morpheus8 system is minimally invasive, using clinical-grade, ultra-fine needles to create microscopic channels in the patient’s skin. These needle pricks stimulate the body into starting its wound-healing process – producing new collagen and elastin. These provide the basis for healthy, revitalized skin.
In addition to the microneedling process, the Morpheus8 delivers radiofrequency thermal energy through the needles deep into the dermis (the lower skin layers) helping to facilitate skin cell repair. The new collagen and elastin fibers will resurface unsightly acne pits and scars, generating healthy, new tissue as damaged cells are replaced. Studies have proven this method to result in significantly swifter improvement of acne scarring than with microneedling alone.
