Microneedling FAQs (Part 3)

What are the side effects of the Microneedling procedure?

Out of the over 150,000 microneedling procedures that have been performed worldwide (including the countless successful procedures conducted by AMAE Med Spa in the West Bloomfield area), there have been no negative side effects reported. Microneedling is a safe and reliable procedure.

Is there anything I should avoid after Microneedling?

For optimal healing, you should avoid retinol, AHAs (glycolic acid) or any other skin products with acidic ingredients for the first 2-3 days following your treatment.

Sun exposure should be avoided and sunscreen should always be worn, both to protect the sensitive skin after microneedling and to prevent further UV damage to the skin.

Am I a candidate for Microneedling?

As medical microneedling does not damage the epidermis, the procedure is perfectly safe on the skin types and colors. You shouldn’t expect to notice any change in pigmentation or post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation following your procedure.

Microneedling is also safe to be performed on fragile or sensitive areas, such as the neck, eyes, and back of hands, that cannot be as easily treated by other procedures.

Who Cannot Get Microneedling?

While most men and women are good candidates for microneedling, it is not suitable for:

• patients who have open wounds or abrasions,
• people who have used Accutane (isotretinoin) in the last three months,
• individuals suffering from any kind of skin condition such as herpes simplex
• pregnant or breast feeding women
• people having a history of poor wound healing
• patients who have had radiation skin treatment within the last year.

Is There any Risks of Post-treatment Infections?

As long as microneedling is performed under clinical conditions, post-op infections are extremely rare. This is because the “wounds” are extremely tiny and close quickly.

However, there have been cases of infection, as well as other complications when microneedling is performed in a NON-medical setting or at home, under unsanitary conditions.

Because there is slight bleeding with microneedling, if needles are shared or unclean there is also the risk of exchanging blood-borne pathogens and diseases.
