What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that improves everything from wrinkles, lines & skin laxity to acne scars and hair loss.
How Microneedling Works
Microneedling uses the insertion of very fine short needles to create microscopic punctures in the skin. Typically, a device called a dermaroller that is made up of micro-fine needles that range in diameter from 0.5 and 3 millimeters is rolled across the facial skin.
While the procedure can get a little bloody, the punctures are more like pin-pricks that enter only skin deep. This triggers the body’s wound healing process, which builds and regenerates the skin’s cells.
In the short-term, microneedling offers fairly immediate results, making the skin look plump and luminous for a couple of weeks. This short-term radiance is actually the result of the inflammation and very superficial swelling from the needle pricks.
In the long-run, microneedling delivers even greater improvement over time. Allure magazine recently reported on a medical study, in which skin treated with four microneedling sessions (one month apart) produced up to a 400% increase in collagen and elastin after six months!
Microneedling can also be used to stimulate dormant hair follicles, resulting in new hair growth.
History of Microneedling
The practice of microneedling has actually been around since 1995, so it is well studied and documented. However, it has only recently gained widespread popularity thanks to newer more effective technology.
Microneedling’s growth is also attributable to celebrities and social media influencers who have shared their love of microneedling on social media and in YouTube videos.
Microneedling + Serums = Fantastic Results
While microneedling on its own is amazing, pairing microneedling with topical treatments such as anti-aging creams or serums is even better.
Anti-aging preparations (including hyaluronic acid and vitamin C) will penetrate the skin better through the needle punctures, than they can when only applied to the skin’s surface. This further advances the collagen building and tissue tightening, for even greater long-term results.
