Understanding the Different Types of Microneedling (Part 1)
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment in which a medical aesthetician creates tiny pricks in the skin using micro-fine needles. This process activates the body’s wound healing process, thereby stimulating collagen and elastin production.
Microneedling is an effective way to treat fine lines, lax facial skin, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars. However, not all types of microneedling are created equal!
In this article the microneedling experts at AMAE Med Spa in the Rochester, Mi area explain the similarities and differences between the different types of microneedling.
DIY Dermarollers and “At Home” Microneedling
Most “at home” microneedling kits available online are “dermarollers” that contain needles that are only 0.25 to .5mm in length. These are far shorter and less penetrating than professional, medical grade microneedles that are typically ranges from 1 mm to 3 mm in depth.
As these shorter needles are on a “roller” they only very superficially treat the skin and are not capable of stimulating deep cellular renew.
While even shorter needles do still help increase skin product absorption, it is the deeper medical-grade microneedling that actually stimulates the skin to naturally produce collagen and elastin.
Additionally, at home microneedling -especially with dermarollers – can tear skin, and cause skin damage or infection, if used improperly or not sterilized correctly.
Skin Stylus Microneedling
AMAE Med Spa is one of only a few providers in the greater Rochester area to offer the advanced SkinStylus® Microtherapy microneedling system.
This state-of-the-art microneedling technology uses an automatic microtherapy stylus that offers a uniform, vertical motion to create microchannels in the skin at a preset depth. Skin Stylus is cleared by the FDA as a Class II microneedling device with an impressive depth of up to 2.5mm.
This Skin Stylus design penetrates skin more deeply and cleanly. Not only does this help stimulate skinreneal on a deep cellular level, it also removes the risk and discomfort of micro tears caused by the microroller design.
EstheCeuticals® microtherapy products are used with the SkinStylus® Microtherapy System. These carefully combined products contain antioxidants, antibacterial and anti-aging nutrients. Included in these formulas are vitamin C and D, copper peptide, retinol, ferulic acid, alpha-lipoic acid and native hyaluronic acid – to create powerful results.
Microneedling with PRP
Additionally, Rochester, MI area AMAE Med Spa now also offers PRP “Platelet Rich Plasma” treatments in conjunction with microneedling. The use of PRP with microneedling is sometimes called a “vampire facial” by other providers.
Orthopedic doctors and sports medicine specialists have used Platelet Rich Plasma (“PRP”) in joint regeneration medicine for more than a decade. This same technology is now being used during microneedling to harness the body’s own healing processes – and minimize fine lines and wrinkles, diminish dark spots, and smooth out scars and stretch marks.
During PRP microneedling plasma containing concentrated “growth factors” is extracted from the patient’s own blood via centrifuge. The purified “platelet rich plasma” is then applied to the skin, where it penetrates the “microchannels” created by microneedling. The growth factors in the PRP stimulate the skin’s cellular renewal process – regenerating the production of collagen and elastin. As skin becomes, thicker, plumper and more elastic, lines and wrinkles disappear and texture and tightness is improved.
